Hood Canal Area

The Hood Canal area of the Olympic National Forest spans the inland southeast portion of the Olympic Peninsula in Mason County, Washington.

The region contains several watersheds, lakes and three Wilderness Areas; Wonder Mountain Wilderness, Mount Skokomish Wilderness, and The Brothers Wilderness.

Elevations vary greatly across the region with an elevation of 800-feet at Lake Cushman to more than 6,612-feet at the summit of Mt. Stone in the Mount Skokomish Wilderness.

Stands of old-growth occur on the lower slopes consisting primarily of Douglas-fir, western hemlock and western red cedar. At the upper elevations, subalpine fir and western white pine give way to rock and scattered alpine vegetation commonly found in the subalpine and alpine zones.
