Alta Lake Trail #979
This lightly traveled trail begins at Wallowa Creek and climbs two miles to the open forest land on the south slope of Gopher Ridge within Sky Lakes Wilderness. The trail continues on to junction with the Middle Fork Trail #978, King Spruce, and Seven Lakes Trail #981. Good camping areas present both to the east and west of Alta Lake on high ground.
Water is present only at Boulder Pond and Alta Lake. Boulder Pond may be dry by September. No horse feed available at Alta Lake.

Potable water is not available. Surface water should be treated.
Wilderness regulations apply:
- Motorized equipment and equipment used for mechanical transport is prohibited. This includes the use of motor vehicles, motorboats, motorized equipment, bicycles, hang gliders, wagons, carts, portage wheels, and the landing of aircraft including helicopters.
Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Sky Lakes Wilderness regulations:
- Caching of equipment is prohibited. Storing equipment, personal property, or supplies is prohibited.
- Possessing or storing hay or unprocessed (viable) grain is prohibited.
- Campsite restriction when camping with stock: Equestrians must camp in designated sites within Seven Lakes Basin and the Blue Canyon Basin, as shown on public hand-out map.
- Campsites and fires prohibited within 100 feet from lakes and 50 feet from streams or springs. This preserves water quality, keeps vegetation healthy, and affords privacy of others.
- Maximum group size: 8 persons and/or 12 stock animals
