Flash Flood Awareness

Recent heavy rains have saturated the ground and raised water levels in rivers and streams. Flash flooding can occur with little or no warning, especially in low-lying areas, stream channels, and valleys. Conditions may remain hazardous even after rainfall ends.

Avoid riverbanks and streambeds. Stay at least 50 feet from the water’s edge. Stay out of valleys and low-lying terrain. Flash floods can happen even if rain occurs upstream. Do not camp in dry streambeds or near water. Be prepared to move to higher ground quickly. Never drive across flooded roads or trails. Turn around, don’t risk it. Watch for weather updates. Conditions can change rapidly.

If Caught in a Flash Flood:

• Move immediately to higher ground.
• Never walk or drive through moving water.
• Call 911 in an emergency and provide your location.

Check the National Weather Service, local forecasts, or contact a ranger station for current information.

Bottom line: Conditions are dangerous near streams, rivers, and valleys. Be alert and ready to move uphill at the first sign of rising water.
