  • Temporary Closure on Portion of Duncan Ridge Road (FSR 39) Beginning March 9

    UPDATE, 30 March 2026:
The bridge is out over Mulkey Creek along FS-39 (Duncan Ridge Rd), and FS-4 (Mulkey Gap Rd) is inaccessible via FS-39. Exercise caution and avoid traveling too far down the road where vehicles are unable to safely turn around.

    __________________________

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest will temporarily close a portion of Duncan Ridge Road (FSR 39) to allow crews to replace a culvert at Mulky Creek. The work is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete. The closure will occur at the west end of Duncan Ridge Road where it intersects with Mulky Gap Road (FSR 4). This work requires closing the road at the creek crossing so crews can safely replace the aging culvert and improve the long-term reliability of the road and surrounding watershed.

Duncan Ridge Road will not be closed end-to-end. Visitors can still access the road from the Wolfpen Gap / Highway 180 side, but they will need to turn around and backtrack, as traffic will not be able to cross Mulky Creek to reach Mulky Gap Road while construction is underway. Visitors who normally travel between Duncan Ridge Road and Mulky Gap Road should plan to use Bryant Creek Road as an alternate route during the closure.

Replacing aging culverts is an important part of maintaining safe access across the National Forest while protecting nearby streams and aquatic habitat. These improvements help reduce the risk of road damage during heavy rain events, improves aquatic organism passage, improves water quality, and supports healthier watershed conditions across the forest.

Visitors planning to travel in the Duncan Ridge area should plan accordingly and allow extra travel time while work is underway. Temporary closures like this allow crews to complete the work safely and efficiently so the road can continue serving forest visitors and local communities for years to come.

For additional information or questions about access in the area, please contact the Blue Ridge Ranger District.

The Forest Service appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as crews work to improve infrastructure and maintain access across the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.
