Balcony Falls to Buena Vista Transmission Line Reconstruction Project

Construction activities on the Balcony Falls to Buena Vista Transmission Line Reconstruction Project (Phase 2) may impact visitors now through December 2026. Public users are advised to use caution in the vicinity and to avoid the transmission line right-of-way during this time.

 In areas of the GWJNF north of Glasgow:

•  Tree clearing and construction access installation will begin January 2026 and continue into spring/summer 2026.  Public users may hear and see heavy equipment during construction activities adjacent to Hwy-501 between Glasgow and Buena Vista.
• Access points to GWJNF along southbound Hwy-501 will be limited and congested with construction traffic.

 In areas of the GWJNF south of Glasgow:

•  Balcony Falls to Skimmer transmission line installation and restoration earthworks have been completed, with only intermittent and localized restoration activities remaining.
• Public users may hear and see vehicles and equipment in the vicinity of Hercules Road and other areas north of the James River adjacent to Hwy-501, as well as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, John’s Hollow Shelter, and Forest Trail #512 Little Rocky Row Run Trail.
