Forest Service fights wildfires in Greene County

JACKSON, Miss. – March 13, 2025 — Forest Service firefighters are currently working to contain two wildfires in Greene County on the Chickasawhay Ranger District. The 112-acre Hunter Fire and the 49-acre Check Fire located about 1.5 miles east of State Highway 63 are about 95 percent contained. Forest Service officials are advising people in and near Richton that they may see smoke in the area today and tomorrow. Please exercise caution. Visibility may be limited.
The fires, on Forest Service land, have not damaged any homes or structures. Firefighters hope to have the fires completely contained later today. Forest Service officials shared that these are wildfires and not related to any prescribed fires. The cause of the fires is under investigation by law enforcement.
