  • Black Lake Creek Recreation Area and Boat Ramp Temporarily Closed for Road Improvements

The USDA Forest Service will temporarily close the Black Lake Creek Recreation Area and boat ramp on the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands in Wise County Texas beginning Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to allow for critical road and site improvements.

The closure is necessary to support reconditioning and chip seal work along Forest Service Road (FSR) 902 / Black Creek Lake Road, as well as maintenance within the recreation area. Construction activities will include debris removal, ditch work, placement of aggregate base, and application of a chip seal surface.

Work is expected to take approximately three weeks, (weather permitting) with the following schedule:

    • Week 1: Clearing vegetation, debris removal, and ditch maintenance
    • Week 2: Placement and grading of aggregate base
    • Week 3: Chip seal application and a required minimum two-day curing period with no traffic

For public safety, the recreation area and boat ramp will be closed throughout construction due to heavy equipment operations, limited parking availability, and road surface treatments.

Visitors are advised to seek alternate recreation sites during the closure. The Forest Service anticipates reopening the area prior to Memorial Day weekend, weather and project conditions permitting.
