RHINELANDER, Wis., October 2, 2024 – The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has closed the Birch Grove Campground in the Washburn District effective October 1, 2024. Construction will start this fall to update the campground by converting two existing single sites into two double sites and building a picnic shelter.

Double sites will accommodate 16 people, twice the amount as a regular single site. The picnic shelter will be near West Twin Lake boat launch and fit two picnic tables. This campground lost many trees during a wind event on July 19, 2019. A picnic shelter will be a nice asset as the forest canopy continues to grow back.

This project is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Birch Grove Recreation Area is a great location for a base camp to explore the Bayfield Peninsula. It is nestled between 22-acre East and 16-acre West Twin Lakes and is close to the community of Washburn. Each lake has a small boat access and includes bass, panfish, and northern pike. During the late summer berry picking is a popular activity in the nearby Moquah Barrens.

Each campsite has a defined parking spur, fire ring, picnic table and some have a tent pad and can accommodate RV's up to 35 feet. Drinking water, vault toilets and a small picnic area are available. There are also areas where campers can access the lake for swimming.

More information on the Birch Grove Recreation Area can be found on our website.
