Due to public safety and trail integrity, Pipeline 4x4 Challenge Trail closed to most motorized use
RHINELANDER, Wis., April 6, 2023 — In the interest of public safety and to ensure the integrity of the American Natural Resources Pipeline Company’s high pressure natural gas pipeline, using a motorized vehicle other than a snowmobile will be prohibited per order # 09-13-23-01 on the National Forest System lands Trail 55552.
Also known as the Pipeline 4x4 Challenge Trail, the trail is located on the Lakewood-Laona Ranger District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Motorized use has caused soil erosion issues and exposed the pipe in multiple locations. The Forest and the American Natural Resources Pipeline Company have taken steps to identify and address safety risks, but Forest resource specialists have estimated that, with continued use as a trail, soil erosion will result in additional pipeline exposure. In addition, the American Natural Resources Pipeline Company does not recommend off-road vehicle which may contribute to additional erosion within the right of way.
The USDA Forest Service has previously closed segments of the trail to mitigate environmental damage and safety issues.
The Emergency Order is effective on April 14, 2023, at 1 p.m., and will be in effect until April 14, 2025.
A map of the Restricted Area is provided for clarity.
Exemptions to the prohibited motorized activity excludes any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty and excludes persons with a special use authorization or other Forest Service authorization specifically exempting them from the effect of the closure.
USDA Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available online for visitors to reference to identify alternative routes.
The USDA Forest Service continues to evaluate conditions to determine long-term planning that is in the interest of public safety and trail integrity.
