RHINELANDER, Wis., March 15, 2024 — The boardwalk in the Long Lake Recreation Area in the Washburn District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest will be closed until further notice so that updates can be made to help ensure safety.

USDA Forest Service specialists are planning a temporary re-route. Information about the re-route will be provided when the details are confirmed. A long-term plan is also being considered.

The boardwalk is located in the popular Long Lake Recreation Area. The Long Lake Recreation Area features two picnic areas and a swim beach with buoys on 32-acre Long Lake, which is a clearwater lake located just west of Washburn on Forest Road 251.

There is a large picnic area with a designated swim beach located at the east end of the lake. It is accessible with paved trails to the picnic area, pedestal grills, water and vault toilets.

The carry-in boat landing, located on the west end of the parking area (Forest Road 1890A), provides access to Long Lake that is great for panfish and bass. It is also very popular for paddling - both kayaks and paddleboards. There are picnic tables and pedestal grills at this location as well.
