  • Lake County Bridge 38535–New Tomahawk Road Construction Project

    Lake County will be completing a bridge rehabilitation project for Bridge 38535, New Tomahawk Road (County State Aid (CSAH) 34) over the Stony River. This work is located within the Superior National Forest, and the planned road closure will impact travel and access to USFS Roads. 

    Project Scope: Replace the existing bridge deck and bridge railing and rehabilitate the bridge abutment and pier supports.    

    Traffic Impacts: New Tomahawk Road (CSAH 34) will be closed to all traffic; a detour will be posted using MN Highway 1 and St. Louis County CSAH 21 and CSAH 120 between Babbitt and the Ely Municipal Airport.    

    Access Impacts: New Tomahawk Road (CSAH 34) will remain open on either side of the bridge and property access will be maintained.   

    Project Schedule: Expected between June and October 2026 and lasting for 8-10 weeks.  

    Funding: Project funding includes Federal Aid for Surface Transportation and County State Aid Highway funding (from the Highway Use Tax Distribution Fund (HUTDF)).

    Right of way: None required, work will take place within the existing right of way

    Tree Clearing:  None anticipated
