Superior National Forest to Close area around Brimson, MN due to fire

Due to the ‘Brimson Complex’ fires (Camphouse & Jenkins) on the Superior National Forest (SNF), Forest Supervisor Tom Hall is closing a portion of the Laurentian Ranger District with an Emergency Forest Order 09-09-25-05 Closure is effective today, May 13, 12:00 pm CT. The closure prohibits visitor entry at campsites, recreation sites, trails, roads and lakes. See Forest Order Exhibit A for a list of closure areas and Exhibit B for a map of the area. This Emergency Forest Closure Order 09-09-2025-05 applies to all listed trails, recreation sites and roads in Exhibit B within the area noted in Exhibit B Map. The Forest Service has notified Recreation .gov reservation holders, concessionaires, and is encouraging those with reservations in the area to seek an alternate area of the Superior National Forest for similar experiences. We understand that this will impact our visitors, and communities near the restricted area. This emergency closure is necessary for the safety of our visitors, area residents and our firefighters.
The Camp House Fire was reported the afternoon of May 11 at approximately 1:00 pm, north of Brimson, MN in St. Louis County, near the Lake County boundary. The Jenkins Creek Fire was reported in the morning of May 12 at approximately 11:00 am, south of Hoyt Lakes, MN in St. Louis County near the junction of County Road 110 and 16. Both fires are burning in mixed forest vegetation with a large quantity of spruce budworm infested forest stands. Cooperating Agencies: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Indian Affairs, US Fish and Wildlife Service, USDA Forest Service, Two Harbors Fire Department, Finland Fire Department, Silver Bay Fire Department and Brimson Volunteer Fire Department and other St. Louis County fire departments, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Fire Service Specialists, St. Louis County Emergency Management, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, and Lake County Sherriff’s Office, and Lake County Emergency Management. Nearby structures were threatened. The fire is currently under investigation.
Northern Minnesota is facing drought conditions, causing active and increasing fire across the landscape. Forest Staff are managing suppression actions on the Brimson Complex Wildfire with additional resources on standby. Please note that any evacuations for wildfire are led by the local Sheriffs Department in cooperation with all agencies involved.
Beyond the closures for the Brimson Complex Fire, the Superior National Forest is open to the public and no other restrictions apply.
