Superior National Forest (NF) is prepping for recreation season to welcome an influx of visitors. We want to provide the most up to date information related to recreation sites for your planning purposes. The safety and enjoyment of our visitors remain top priorities, and we’ll steward the areas we can with available staff and resources. Important status information and hours are provided below:
- Recreation campgrounds and site information is on our website for fee reservations, and first-come, first-served camping locations. Rustic campgrounds and backcountry sites do not have garbage service. Please pack out your garbage and do not bury it or throw it in the restroom or latrines. Campsites can be reserved on Recreation.gov
- Check conditions of lakes, access roads and if there are any campfire restrictions as they can vary across the Superior NF. Lakes in northern Minnesota remain cold throughout summer and can be dangerous.: Always wear your life vest! Learn more about cold-water safety from the Minnesota DNR. Practice smart campfire ethics even if there is not a fire ban in effect by keeping fires small and contained, have water nearby and put it out completely, and opt out of not having a fire on a windy day, and bring a small stove for cooking.
- Check Superior NF office hours for any information needs or to pick up your Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) permit. Need to change your BWCAW issuing station or cancel a permit? Permittees can change their issuing station through their recreation.gov account any time before picking up their permit. The Recreation.gov app makes it easy and convenient. BWCAW permit issuing stations may be open earlier or later than Forest Service offices.
- Be bear aware! Bears are out of hibernation and searching for food. A fed bear is a dead bear! Take precautions to discourage bears from visiting your campsite by keeping it clean. Learn about Forest Order 09-09-24-02 for the BWCAW that requires all food, food containers and scented items be safely stored to help prevent bear-human interactions.
Thank you for doing your part to help keep the Superior NF safe, enjoyable, and pristine for all visitors.
