On Monday, March 24, the Russian River Campground will close for all public use, including vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and will remain closed through June 3. Major construction with heavy equipment will occur on the Russian River Campground Road in the weeks ahead. The closure area begins at the Russian River Campground entrance and includes all trails, roads, parking lots, campground loops, and facilities within the closure boundaries.
The reconstruction of a one-mile section of Russian River Campground Road will involve extensive use of heavy machinery to complete the remaining components of new retaining walls, and to build up the roadway structure. This work creates a clear, immediate, and continuous health and safety risk to visitors, necessitating this closure.
All access trails to the Russian River Campground area will be closed to the public during this time as well. Russian Lakes Trail will be closed from the Russian River Campground Road to the intersection of the Russian Lakes Trail Lower and Upper Parking Lot trails.
Angler’s Trail is not included in the closure; however, it will only be accessible by boat via the Kenai River or by crossing on the Russian River Ferry at Sportsman’s Landing.
The Aspen Flats and Upper Russian Lake Cabins will remain open for reservations; however, the locations will not be accessible through the Lower Russian Lakes trailhead. Those looking to stay at these cabins or hike the Russian Lakes Trail will be able to access them via the trailhead at Snug Harbor Road. Reservations for Barber Cabin will also be closed until the campground reopens.
Residents and visitors should be mindful of the upcoming closure when planning to recreate in the area. For nearby camping alternatives, please visit Recreation.gov and the Chugach National Forest website.
Following completion of the retaining walls, road paving and the installation of safety railing will be scheduled for implementation. Once finished, the improved features will enhance access to recreational users for many years to come while simultaneously preventing the loss of valuable salmon habitat through hillside erosion.
The Forest Service is committed to providing the best possible experience for visitors at one of Alaska's most treasured recreational sites. We appreciate the public's patience as this important work is carried out.
