Area and Road Closure Order Prince of Wales Ranger District
The Ross Adams Mine area will be closed for public safety due to contamination removal and remediation work that includes the continuous use of large heavy earthmoving equipment (on the road system that accesses the mine site and locations where work will be occurring).
The closure will be in place seasonally: April 6 through September 30, 2026, and April 1 through September 30, 2027.

PROHIBITIONS
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50 (a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited within in the vicinity of the Ross Adams Mine within the Prince of Wales Ranger District on the Tongass National Forest, as shown on the attached map:
- Going into or being upon the area of National Forest System (NFS) lands that include the portions of the dock and loadout barge above mean high tide in the West Arm of Kendrick Bay. 36 C.F.R. § 53(e).
- Going into or being upon any road or area of National Forest System (NFS) lands within 200’ from the centerline of the mine roads, including the road from the dock to the 300’-level portal, the road to the 900’-level, the road between the 900’-level and the 700’-level, and the I & L 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(e) and § 261.54(e).
- Going into or being upon the area of National Forest System (NFS) lands within 250’ from the edge of the Ore Staging Area (OSA), mine rock piles, portals, and open pit. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(e).
EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from the Order:
- Persons with a Forest Service permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e)(1).
- Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty. 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e)(4).
IMPLEMENTATION
- This Order is effective from April 6, 2026, through September 31, 2026, and from April 1, 2027, through September 31, 2027.
- These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.
- A violation of the above prohibitions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
- Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language definitions.
