Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Unit Food Closure

Order No. 10-05-33-26-12

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 CFR § 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited within the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area Visitor Center Unit of the Tongass National Forest, Juneau Ranger District, depicted in the attached map. This order is effective until October 31, 2026.

1. Possessing or storing any food or refuse as specified in the order 36 CFR
§ 261.58(cc)

     No consumption of food or open beverages other than water within the area shown on the attached map,        except for persons consuming food or beverages within the designated area, as depicted in the attached        map.

Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50 (e), the following are exempt from this order:

1. Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited activity.
2. Any Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Officer or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.

IMPLEMENTATION:

This Order shall be effective from August 10, 2026, at 6AM through October 31, 2026, at Midnight, unless rescinded.
A map identifying the described area is attached and made part of this Order as Attachment 1.

Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 CFR Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 CFR Chapter II, Parts 200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language definitions.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR part 261, subpart A. Executed in Juneau, Alaska, this TENTH day of AUGUST, 2026.

Violation of this order is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of up to $5,000.00 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both. (16
