Mendenhall Recreation Area Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Emergency Closure

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 CFR § 261.50 (a) & (b), the following acts are prohibited on National Forest System (NFS) lands, roads, and trails in the Tongass National Forest, Juneau Ranger District as shown on the accompanying map incorporated into this Order as Attachment 1.
 

PROHIBITIONS
Going into or being upon the lands, roads, and trails in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area shown as the Mendenhall Lake Closure Area on Attachment 1 to this order, including but not limited to the Mendenhall Campground, Skaters Cabin, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and Dredge Lakes Area. 36 CFR §§ 261.53(e); 261.54(e); 261.55(a).
 

EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following are exempt from this Order:
1. Any Federal, State or local law enforcement officer, forest employee or member of an organized rescue organization in the performance of their official duties.
2. Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited activity (a permit for outfitting, guiding or transporting does not exempt the holder from this Order)
 

IMPLEMENTATION
1. This Order is in effect as of the date of my signature below and will remain in effect until August 31, 2026.
2. The map identifying the Closure Area is attached and made part of this Order as Attachment 1.
3. A Violation of this order is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000.00 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 18 USC § 3559, 3571, and 3581.
4. These prohibitions are in addition to the prohibitions in 36 CFR part 261, subpart A.
