The Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project (Project) was chartered by the Director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Chief of the Forest Service in January 1994. The project charter directed that the development of an ecosystem management strategy be a multi-agency effort with an open public process. In its committment to an open process, the project involves people early and often, shares information as it becomes available, and uses both traditional and non-traditional methods to reach a wide spectrum of people interested in the management of public lands.
Collaboration, interaction, and consultation occur with other federal, state, county, and tribal government officials, and with special interest groups, interested individuals, and the general public. Hundreds of public meetings have been held throughout the project area and there have been innumerable briefings, conference calls, collaborative intergovernmental working meetings, and one-on-one information exchanges.
