Description:
Abstract:
This package contains all necessary data to fit a model of feral swine occupancy and abundance in southern Missouri from 2020-2024. These data include feral swine presence/absence data collected via systematic baiting, numbers of feral swine removal via traps and aerial operations, and the amount of time spent conducting these activities. We also include data on the proportion of oak cover, agricultural cover, and development to investigate the impact of these factors on feral swine distribution and population growth. Data are aggregated to the HUC10 watershed spatial and to either 10-day subperiod of 90-day primary period scales. Feral swine data were collected via USDA Wildlife Services management operations and covariate data were collected via remote sensing by other projects.
Purpose:
Data were collected during regular operations of Missouri Wildlife Services feral swine monitoring and removal to manage invasive feral swine damage to agriculture.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Data on feral swine removal were collected on the ground via the Collector App–an internal ESRI application used by Wildlife Services. Observations outside of the study area or with obviously incorrect spatial coordinates were removed for analysis. True duplicates were removed from systematic baiting and removal data, but because we analyzed the data well after it was collected, there was no way to quality control the data, other than removing obvious spatial outliers.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
We removed any instances where a feral swine was reported as sighted or removed from Missouri, but the spatial location was not within Missouri state lines.
Completeness_Report:
No missing data.

Methodology_Description:
Systematic baiting involves setting out piles of corn on the landscape that are checked every 3-5 days for sign of feral swine activity. Corral traps were used to trap feral swine live. Aerial operations involve shooting feral swine via helicopter.

Systematic baiting data, trapping, and aerial operations were collected in the Collector App, a handheld data entry system used in the field by Wildlife Services professionals. Geolocations for traps and bait stations were recorded along with the number of pigs detected or caught and the date. Aerial operations removal numbers and dates of removal were recorded in Collector, and aerial operations tracks were recorded via geolocation devices affixed to aircraft. We used data on hours spent trapping, systematic baiting, and flying aircraft from an internal Wildlife Services database that tracks person-hours for wildlife management work tasks.

Oak cover, agricultural cover, and development cover were all extracted via satellite imagery and classified using machine learning methods.

Agricultural cover and development cover were extracted from the National Landcover Database 2019 dataset (NLCD).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
We georeferenced all systematic baiting locations and summed the total number of detections and number of days traps were open for each 10-day subperiod within a 90-day primary period, for each HUC10 watershed (SiteID). We totaled the number of feral swine removed via traps and aerial operations, and hours spent removing them, by HUC10 watershed and subperiod as well. Hours spent removing or baiting for feral swine and trap-nights were divided by the area of the watershed to obtain hours per square kilometers.
Process_Date: Unknown
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Aerial operations track data were filtered to times when the helicopter was operating at less than 25 miles per hour within the study area, as this indicates when they were shooting feral swine and not in transit.

All watershed data were georeferenced to larger feral swine elimination area polygons provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Process_Description:
To calculate the proportion of available or effective area, we added a 6.7 square kilometer circular buffer around all trap locations, and a 528 meter buffer around helicopter track data. These areas were intersected with HUC10 watershed polygons using the "sf" package in R and the proportion of watershed covered by the trap/aerial area polygon was recorded as the proportion of the site covered.

Raster oak cover data were extracted from the U.S. Geological Survey's GAP/LANDFIRE 2011 dataset. Area was calculated by HUC10 watershed and divided by the watershed area to obtain the proportion of the watershed covered by oak.
