Description:

Abstract:
- Seeds from 79 natural stands throughout the ponderosa pine range, both east and west of the Continental Divide, were sown and grown in a nursery for three to four years in the 1960's. These seeds were then distributed to plantations, mostly in the Great Plains. This dataset contains the height of the surviving trees after 15 years for 14 plantations.
-
Purpose:
- The study began in 1968 to determine the best seed provenances of ponderosa pine for use in protection plantings in the Great Plains of the United States. The data represent fifteen-year survival and height growth. The objectives of this study were to: 1) identifiy originals of superior performing seed sources; 2) determine the consistency of their performance across the range of plantations, and within regional groupings of plantations; and 3) determine how many years of data are necessary to detect reliable patterns in height growth.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- Seeds were collected from stands throughout the ponderosa pine (var. scopulorum) range, east of the Continental Divide; and populations in the ponderosa pine (var. ponderosa) range, west of the Continental Divide. These seeds were grown in a nursery near Halsey, Nebraska and a nursery near Towner, North Dakota. The seeds were planted in plantations widely distributed throughout the Great Plains of the United States in: Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Michigan, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan in Canada.

Completeness_Report:
- Originally there were 28 plantations, mostly in the Great Plains, but low survival or no data precluded valid analysis of 12 of those plantations, hence data are only available for 16 plantations. Missing data resulting from provenances intentionally omitted from some plantations, lack of seedlings for complete stocking in all plantations, and poor survival in some planatations, restricted the analysis in the referenced publication to the following seven plantations: Towner, ND; Kellogg Forest, MI-1; HTS Alliance, NE-1; Halsey, NE-2; Hastings, NE-3b; Milford, KS; and Columbia, MO. Individual tree data are only available for 14 of the 16 plantations. This dataset has been passed down through the years and unfortunately we are unable to find original records for 2 plantations: Saskatchewan in Canada and Watertown in South Dakota. However, average heights for all 16 plantations are available in the publication listed below.

Methodology_Description:
- Seeds were collected from 1962 through 1964, from 10 to 15 trees in each of 79 natural stands throughout the pondersoa pine range both east and west of the Continental Divide. Seeds from individual trees sampled within a population were bulked into provenance seedlots, sown, and grown from 1965 through 1968 at the USDA Forest Service Bessey Nursery near Halsey, NE and at the North Dakota State Nursery near Towner, ND. Seedlings were distributed from 1968 through 1970 to cooperators for the establishment of 28 plantations mostly in the Great Plains. The intended field design was to establish the 79 provenances in randomized complete blocks at each plantation, with 15 replications of 4-tree-linear plots. There were variations in the experimental design among plantations, depending upon local conditions. The methods used to determine tree height and survival are unknown.

Process_Description:
- Individual tree heights were averaged within each plantation location, for each seed provenance. Trees that did not survive had a height measurement of 0, so survival percentage was calculated as the percentage of trees with a measured height divided by the total number of trees originally planted. Tree growth is considered to be tree height - 0, because all trees were originally seeds.

Process_Description:
- The original ASCII dataset was a compilation of individual tree data from 14 different plantations and average heights for one plantation, separated with spaces and titles. Height measurements were in many different units. The data was put into tabular form and a column added for plantation name. Then all of the height measurements were converted to the same units (feet) and verified against averages published in the paper listed in the Supplemental Information section above. Units for some of the plantations were not listed and one was incorrect. The final dataset only contains the individual tree data from 14 plantations. Averages can be found in the publication.
