Abstract:
- This data publication contains a geodatabase as well as tabular digital data for Central Nevada meadows that were based on data collected in the summer of 2005 and 2006. The geodatabase includes plant community arrangements, streams, springs, and watersheds within each meadow. It also provides a large array of information about each meadow through the attribute table, as well as active links within the geodatabase that open up each meadows respective photographs and aerial photograph (when available). The tabular digital data contain plant community information characterized from randomly located 0.25 meter plots (between 15 and 20 per community depending on size). At each plot: aerial cover, basal cover, and species cover were estimated for all the species using cover classes. Individual species types were also recorded. Three cross sections, chosen to represent the range of channel shapes, were surveyed in each meadow reach and in the reaches above and below the meadow. In the field a Topcon GTS-211D total station was used to also survey a long profile which provided detailed information about the streams slope, shape, length, depth, bank condition, and more.
-
Purpose:
- The vector digital data (GIS) were measured, in part, to assign vegetation types to the "Meadow_Community" shapefile's polygons. It was also done to help quantify and characterize the streams within the meadow community.
The intent of the tabular digital data was to provide users an easy way to view the plant community arrangement, streams, springs, and watersheds within each meadow.
-
Supplemental_Information:
- Cross sections that were taken with the total station may have spatial coordinates that can be loaded into the GIS, otherwise the cross section is described under the field "LOCATION". A general location such as ABOVE for above the GIS meadow, IN for inside the GIS meadow, FAN for a cross section taken within the fan, and BELOW indicating a cross section somewhere below the GIS meadow.
The long profile data contains many of the same points from the "Streams" shapefile available in the GIS data. However, this data is not in UTM coordinates, so it is not included inside the geodatabase. The coordinates are in a meter grid system, and therefore can still be graphed accurately. A set of points for a given meadow may contain more or less points than its respective "Stream" polyline.

- Outlines:
A Garmin etrex vista GPS unit was used to delineate the plant communities and the meadow outline by walking around them.
Streams:
In the field a Topcon GTS-211D total station was used to survey a long profile of the stream channel.
Aerial and basal cover class were accurate to +/- 1 cover class.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
- GIS DATA:
Meadow_Community:
A Garmin etrex vista GPS unit was used to delineate the plant communities and the meadow outline by walking around them. The polygon size could be slightly off due to GPS accuracy and if the person walking the GPS deviated from the plant community to avoid obstructions, or by accident.
Outlines:
Due to rounding errors some of the community percentages (from the 8 community types in the attribute table) add up to numbers such as 98 and 101.
Streams:
The total station recorded coordinates in its own coordinate system which was then rotated using polar coordinated (in Microsoft Excel) to match the approximate location of the stream within the meadow. This process does cause some distortion which varies in amount from meadow to meadow. There is more error in the longest streams.
TABULAR DATA:
Aerial_cover, basal_cover, and species_cover:
Excel auto-filter was used to isolate "Cover_class" values for aerial, basal, and species cover which were not equal to T or 1 through 7. For both aerial and basal cover, these erroneous entries were removed and other entries for the plot were left and therefore do not represent cover for the whole plot. For species cover, the erroneous entries were given a value of "U" for unknown.
Cross_Sections:
When UTM coordinates were available they were plotted on to a map to verify their relationship to the stream. This does not necessarily mean the coordinates are right, but it allowed UTM removal of cross sections that were obviously erroneously located.

Completeness_Report:
- GIS DATA:
Meadow_Community:
Seven major meadow communities were identified based on depth to groundwater and vegetation structure. These were wet, mesic, dry, dry shrub, willow, rose and aspen. Other authors (Manning and Padgett 1995, Weixelman et al 1996) have created more community groups based on species composition and related them to various physical characteristics like soils and elevation (see Appendix 1 for a table illustrating their relationships to the groupings used here). We used fewer groups than these authors. We were primarily interested in the relationship between vegetation and groundwater depth so we based our grouping on those used by authors studying this relationship (Castelli et al 2000).
Streams:
Some points were omitted that were obviously taken in error. Gaps in the meadow are sometimes present where the vegetation was too thick to get through, or too thick to allow the required line of sight for the total station to "see" the prism.
TABULAR DATA:
Aerial_cover: Out of over 9500 records less than 20 were removed from the final data file.
Basal_cover: Out of over 9000 records less than 10 were removed from the final data file.
Species_cover: Out of over 18500 records less than 30 were given a value of "U" for unknown.
Cross_Sections: There are some missing values in the dataset.
Long_profile: There are some blanks in the dataset due to how it was gathered. The meanings for some of the bank_codes are unknown. The bank_codes that are known are described in the entity attribute/attribute domain values. Additionally, due to thick vegetation data for some areas of the stream channel was not collected. This results in gaps in the data. These gaps were indicated by a change in the entity attribute called "segment".
Species_list: Full species name was not available for some species codes.

We were primarily interested in the relationship between vegetation and groundwater depth so we based our grouping on those used by authors studying this relationship (Castelli et al 2000). A Garmin etrex vista GPS unit was used to delineate the plant communities and the meadow outline by traversing the perimeters. There were 5 main plant communities - wet, mesic, dry, dry shrub, and willow (modified from Weixelman et al. 1996 and Manning and Padgett 1995). Manning, M. E., and W. G. Padgett. 1995. Riparian community type classification for Humboldt and Toiyabe National Forests, Nevada and eastern California. R4-Ecol-95-01. USDA Forest Service, Intermountain Region, Ogden, UT. Castelli, R. M., J. C. Chambers, and R. J. Tausch. 2000. Soil-plant relations along a soil-water gradient in great basin riparian meadows. Wetlands 20:251-266.
Outline:
The outline of the overall meadow was taken with a GPS unit. The meadow boundary was defined using vegetation type.
Spring_location:
Springs a GPS unit and measured with a tape. Springs without geomorphic expression (localized and likely ephemeral wet spots) were mapped but not measured to minimize the impact of sampling date. The springs were also identified as multiple or single.
Streams:
In the field a Topcon GTS-211D total station was used to survey the stream thalweg and watersurface, or where it was belived to be if the stream was dry.
Watersheds:
Watershed level control variables were measured using USGS topographic maps and DEMs in ArcGIS. The drainage basins were delineated on 7.5 minute USGS topographic maps using ArcGIS software. Hawth's Analysis Tools (Beyer 2004) were used to measure the drainage basin area, the area of the basin above the meadow, and the areas of the drainage basin above the 8,000 feet (2,438m) and 9,000 feet (2,743m) contours. The drainage lines were drawn based on the blue lines on the topographic maps. They were extended upstream where the contour crenulations indicated that the valleys were pronounced or when springs and vegetation suggested that channels extended upslope. Channel lengths were measured using Hawth's Analysis Tools (Beyer 2004). This tool calculates the lengths of all the line segments and then sums them. Relief and maximum elevations were determined by picking spot elevations from the topographic maps. For the purposes of this study watersheds were defined as the catchment area above each meadow and the catchment area of the whole watershed above the terminal alluvial fan. Total precipitation and watershed average precipitation were calculated by overlaying the watershed area polygons on the PRISM map of annual precipitation and weighting the precipitation by area. Beyer, H. L. 2004. Hawth's Analysis Tools for ArcGIS. Available at //www.spatialecology.com/htools.
TABULAR DATA:
Aerial_cover, basal_cover, and species_cover:
Plant communities were described using randomly located 0.25 meter plots (between 15 and 20 per community depending on size). At each plot aerial cover was estimated for all the species using cover classes (T, 1-5, 6-10, 11-25, 26-50, 51-75, 76-95, 96-100).
Cross_Sections:
Three cross sections were surveyed in each meadow reach and in the reaches above and below the meadow. The cross sections were chosen to represent the range of channel shapes. As a result there was always a cross section in the deepest part of the channel. Where possible the cross sections were surveyed using to total station, but cross sections that were obscured by willows or aspens were measured using a tape measure. The tape was stretched taut across the channel and distance along the tape and height of the tape were recorded. Points were surveyed or measured at breaks in slope, the water surface, the thalweg and the meadow surface (two points on either side of the channel). The channel depth was calculated by subtracting the elevation of the thalweg from the average elevation of the four meadow surface points. This was used as a measure of incision.
Cross sections that were taken with the total station may have spatial coordinates that can be loaded into the GIS, otherwise the cross section is described under the field "LOCATION". A general location such as ABOVE for above the GIS meadow, IN for inside the GIS meadow, FAN for a cross section taken within the fan, and BELOW indicating a cross section somewhere below the GIS meadow.
Long_profile:
In the field a Topcon GTS-211D total station was used to survey a long profile. Points were shot in pairs, one at the thalweg and one at the water surface. They were shot at breaks in slope and changes in channel direction. At each water surface point, a code was recorded to describe the bank stability. Each side of the channel was classified as either vertical bank or continuous slope. Vertical banks were unvegetated and showed signs of recent erosion. Knickpoints were indicated where they occured. For points not containing water the presumed thalweg location elevation was measured.
