Description:
Abstract:
These data document annual detections of breeding birds in canyons throughout four mountain ranges in the central Great Basin (Lander, Nye, and Eureka counties, Nevada): the Shoshone Mountains, Toiyabe Range, Toquima Range, and Monitor Range. Data were collected during the breeding season from 2001 through 2014, inclusive. Birds were detected during fixed-radius point counts. In most cases, each point was visited three times per breeding season. Data include coordinates of each point, species detected, and date and method of detection.
Purpose:
Data were collected to examine relationships among occurrence or occupancy of birds, topography, and vegetation. In some cases, changes in vegetation were a result of wildfire or prescribed fire. Data also were collected to investigate baseline variation in occurrence of birds in space and time, to compare distributions of birds and butterflies in space and time. Knowledge of baseline variation informs assessment of possible effects of environmental change, whether natural or anthropogenic. Additionally, data were collected to develop new methods or refine existing methods for measurement of species occupancy and species richness.
Supplemental_Information:
The first edition of these data was made available on 01/27/2011 (Fleishman [2011]). The second was made available on 03/01/2013 (Fleishman[2013]). This third edition adds 2 more years of data. Furthermore, this new edition also reflects revisions by the American Ornithologists' Union to some of the taxonomy published in the 2nd edition. Also, the metadata were improved. Additional data on breeding birds in the same region are available (Fleishman [2015b]): during point counts, birds detected at > 100 meters (2005-2014); flyovers during point counts (birds not necessarily using resources in the point, but present in the area); records of species detected during field research but not during point counts or at point locations. Minor metadata updates on 12/09/2016.

** NOTE: A fourth edition of these data was published on 04/26/2019 (Fleishman [2019]), which included 2 additional years of data (2015 and 2018) and a few other updates to the data. We recommend the use of this newer edition.

Classification_System_Modifications:
Scientific names of 10 species differ from those in ITIS. The taxonomy for these 5 is consistent with the standard accepted authority for taxonomy of North and Middle American birds: the Birds of North and Middle America Checklist (NACC) produced by the American Ornithologists' Union's North American Classification Committee.

ITIS lists a different genus for 3 species:
1. Pine Siskin
2. Lesser Goldfinch
3. American Goldfinch
ITIS lists the scientific names of these species as Carduelis pinus, Carduelis psaltria, and Carduelis tristis, respectively. The genus name according to the NACC, and the genus name used here, is instead Spinus.

Additionally, the scientific names of 2 species of warblers were revised in 2011. All are in phylum Chordata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Parulidae. The scientific names of the species along with the previous genus in which the species was placed, and the corresponding common names, are as follows:
1. Oreothlypis celata (formerly Vermivora; Orange-crowned Warbler)
2. Oreothlypis virginiae (formerly Vermivora; Virginia's Warbler)

Similarly, the scientific names of 5 additional species were revised with updates to the genus and species. These species, and the corresponding common names, are as follows:
1. Haemorhous mexicanus (formerly Carpodacus mexicanus; House Finch)
2. Artemisiospiza nevadensis (formerly Amphispiza bello, Sage Sparrow was split into two species – Sagebrush Sparrow and Bell’s Sparrow)
3. Haemorhous purpureus (formerly Carpodacus purpureus; Purple Finch)
4. Psiloscops flammeolus (formerly Otus flammeolus; Flammulated Owl)
5. Haemorhous cassinii (formerly Carpodacus cassinii; Cassin's Finch)

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Detections are thought to be true. Coordinates should be accurate within approximately 10 meters horizontal. Detection distances generally are accurate.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Any questionable records were verified carefully with the observer. Most observers had considerable experience observing birds, often in the Intermountain West. If any doubt remained in the principal investigators' minds about the validity of a record, it was omitted. Observers often checked detection distances with laser rangefinders.
Completeness_Report:
During each year, we conducted surveys (i.e., three point counts per point) for breeding birds at most of the extant survey points. In rare cases, inclement weather prevented three visits to each point. We were unable to visit all points in all years due to logistical constraints (e.g., severe weather, impassable roads, insufficient manpower).

Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Field
Methodolgy_Identifier:
Methodolgy_Keyword_Thesaurus:
None
Methodology_Keyword: fixed-radius point counts
Methodology_Description:
We surveyed birds during the breeding seasons (late May through June) with 75-meter (2001-2004) or 100-meter (2005-2014) fixed-radius point counts. We established 179 survey points in 2001, and added additional points in most years through 2010. Most point centers were placed >350 meters apart. During each visit, we recorded by sound or sight all birds using terrestrial habitat within the survey area. Point counts were conducted only in calm weather, and few were conducted >3.5 hours after dawn. Points were sampled three times per year for five minutes (2001-2004) or eight minutes (2005-2014) per visit. Observers recorded which birds were observed from the start of the survey to 5 minutes (min) and from > 5 min to 8 min. Therefore, the eight-minute data can be truncated to five minutes. Survey points were located along the full elevational gradient of the canyons we sampled, typically with two or three points per 100 meters of vertical elevation change. Points were positioned in order to sample the dominant vegetation types in proportion to the approximate extent of each vegetation type. Dominant vegetation was consistent within the point. We estimated the geographic coordinates (measured in Universal Transverse Mercator units; UTMs) of each survey point with a global positioning system.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Some points included in the 2001-2012 data files (which are the previous edition data) also are the same as those in 2013-2014 data files, but have been renamed to better differentiate between the east and west sides of the mountain range. Points with the prefix DO (Dobbin) in the previous edition have been renamed DE (Dobbin East) or DW (Dobbin West). Points that previously were referenced as WL14-WL22 (Wallace) have been renamed AL14-AL22 (Allison). Points that previously were referenced as RY08-RY13 (Ryegrass) have been renamed WH08-WH13 (White Sage). Also, point AL16 and point CBN03 are the same, and in some cases measurements were doubled up for these points. This renaming of these points also applies to the vegetation data measured at these sites (see Cross-Reference section above).

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Central_GreatBasin_bird_data.csv is a comma-delimited ASCII text file containing bird detection data. Each row is a detection of an individual bird. These data contain the following variables:

Column A (OBSERVER) = initials of the person who recorded the bird (names available from the Point of Contact - see Point of Contact section).

Column B (RANGE) = mountain range in which the point was located (Monitor, Shoshone, Toiyabe, or Toquima).

Column C (CANYON) = canyon in which the point was located. Canyon names generally are consistent with those displayed on current USDA Forest Service maps.

Column D (YEAR) = year of the detection (2001-2014).

Column E (DATE) = date of the detection (dd-Mon-yyyy, where dd=day, Mon=name of month and yyyy=year).

Column F (POINT) = point of contact's shorthand reference for the fixed location of the point. This is just a reference code for the researcher, but in most cases, numbers within a canyon increase as elevation increases.

Column G (VISIT) = within a given year, sampling round (of 3 rounds) associated with the detection.

Column H (TIME) = start time of sampling for the point (hh:mm, where hh=hour and mm=minutes). This field has a dot (.) if observers did not record the time.

Column I (WIND (M/SEC)) = wind speed in meters per second at the start of the point count. Recorded in 2013 and 2014. This field has a dot (.) if observers did not record the wind speed.

Column J (TEMP (C)) = air temperature in degrees Celsius at the start of the point count. Recorded in 2013 and 2014. This field has a dot (.) if observers did not record the temperature.

Column K (SPECIES CODE) = four-letter species code from English and Scientific Alpha Codes for North American Birds through the 55th AOU Supplement (2014) (www.birdpop.org/alphacodes.htm, accessed October 2014).

Column L (ENGLISH NAME) = English name of species from Check-list of North American Birds, 7th edition and its supplements (http://checklist.aou.org/taxa/, accessed December 2016).

Column M (SCIENTIFIC NAME) = scientific name of species.

Column N (METHOD) = indicates how the bird was detected (S = by sight, V = by vocalization, SV or VS = by both sight and vocalization and the order could imply which occurred first or it could mean simultaneous observation by sight and vocalization). This field has a dot (.) if observers did not record how they detected the bird.

Column O (DISTANCE) = distance from the point center at which the bird was detected. In most years, distances were recorded in the following bins: 0-10 meters (m), >10-25 m, >25-50 m, >50-75 m, >75-100 m. Except in 2001, values of 10 indicate that the bird was observed 0-10 m from the point center; values of 25 indicate that the bird was observed >10-25 m from the point center; values of 50 indicate that the bird was observed >25-50 m from the point center; values of 75 indicate that the bird was observed >50-75 m from the point center; and values of 100 indicate that the bird was observed >75-100 m from the point center.

Column P (FLEW IN) = whether the bird flew into the point during the count (1=yes, 0=no).

Column Q (>5-8) = whether the bird was detected >5-8 minutes after the count started (1=yes, 0=no).

Column R (UTMx) = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11).

Column S (UTMy) = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) y (or northing) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11).
