Description:
Abstract:
These data document observations of birds, mostly in canyons and a small proportion in intervening valleys, throughout four mountain ranges in the central Great Basin (Lander, Nye, and Eureka counties, Nevada): the Shoshone Mountains, Toiyabe Range, Toquima Range, and Monitor Range. A small number of observations were made in the valleys adjacent to these mountain ranges. Data were collected from 2002 through 2014, inclusive. These data complement those in Fleishman (2015a), which included detections of breeding birds during fixed-radius point counts within 100 meters of the observer. The data in this data publication allow more-complete documentation of the composition and distribution of the local and regional avifauna than would be possible with the fixed-radius point-count data alone. Some birds documented in these data were detected during fixed-radius point counts but were outside the radius of the sample point (e.g., >100 meters from the observer) or flying over the point rather than apparently using resources within the point. Others were detected opportunistically while traveling to sampling locations. The records also include juveniles, which are not included in published analyses. Data include species detected, date of detection, and, in most cases, method of detection and either coordinates or an approximate location.
Purpose:
These data were collected in the course of sampling to examine relationships among occurrence or occupancy of birds, topography, and vegetation, and for data collected before 2013, especially in the context of changes in vegetation as a result of wildfire or prescribed fire. Data also were collected during studies to investigate baseline variation in occurrence of birds in space and time and to compare distributions of birds and butterflies in space and time. Knowledge of baseline variation informs assessment of possible effects of environmental change, whether natural or anthropogenic. These data complement those in Fleishman (2015a), which had strict criteria or standards with respect to, for example, sampling methods, bird behavior, location, and age class. The data in this file are reliable, but do not meet those strict criteria. The data are useful for documenting species composition and distribution across space and time. Some species included in these data are not represented in the data from the fixed-radius point counts.
Supplemental_Information:
Among the reasons these data are considered incidental or long distance (hence included in this file rather than Fleishman [2015a]) include but are not limited to the following. Bird was detected during a fixed-radius point count but observer did not record distance from the point center (thus it is unclear whether the detection was within 100 meters of the observer, which is a criterion for many analyses); detected during point counts but at > 75 meters (2002-2004) or > 100 meters (2005-2014) from the point center (the limit for inclusion in many analyses); not detected during point counts (e.g., bird was observed while traveling between sampling locations or in the afternoon or evening rather than during morning point-counts); juvenile bird rather than adult (most analyses are restricted to adults assumed to be breeding in the vicinity).

Various measurements of vegetation at or near point-count locations, which may be useful for exploring associations with presence, are available (Fleishman [2015b]).

The first edition of these incidental and long-distance bird data was made available on 11/18/2013 (Fleishman [2013]). This second edition of the data adds two more years of data including data from locations that were not represented in the first edition, along with minor metadata improvements. Minor metadata updates on 12/15/2016.

**NOTE: In 2019 a third edition of these data became available (Fleishman [2019]). We recommend use of this newest edition which added another year of data, along with minor metadata improvements.

Scientific names of 7 species differ from those in ITIS. The taxonomy for these 7 is consistent with the standard accepted authority for taxonomy of North and Middle American birds: the Birds of North and Middle America Checklist (NACC) produced by the American Ornithologists' Union's North American Classification Committee.

ITIS lists a different genus for 2 species:
1. Pine Siskin
2. Lesser Goldfinch
ITIS lists the scientific names of these species as Carduelis pinus, and Carduelis psaltria, respectively. The genus name according to the NACC, and the genus name used here, is instead Spinus.

Additionally, the scientific names of 2 species of warblers were revised in 2011. All are in phylum Chordata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Parulidae. The scientific names of the species along with the previous genus in which the species was placed, and the corresponding common names, are as follows:
1. Oreothlypis celata (formerly Vermivora; Orange-crowned Warbler)
2. Oreothlypis virginiae (formerly Vermivora; Virginia's Warbler)

The scientific names of 2 species of finches were revised in 2012. Both are in phylum Chordata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Fringillidae. The scientific names of the species along with the previous genus in which the species was placed, and the corresponding common names, are as follows:
1. Haemorhous mexicanus (formerly Carpodacus; House Finch)
2. Haemorhous cassinii (formerly Carpodacus; Cassin's Finch)

Similarly, the scientific names of 1 additional species was revised with updates to the genus and species. This species, and the corresponding common name, is as follows:
1. Artemisiospiza nevadensis (formerly Amphispiza bello, Sage Sparrow was split into two species – Sagebrush Sparrow and Bell’s Sparrow)

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Detections are thought to be true. Unless indicated as approximate, coordinates should be accurate within approximately 10 meters horizontal. Detection distances generally are accurate.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Any questionable records were verified carefully with the observer. Most observers had considerable experience observing birds, often in the Intermountain West. If the principal investigators had any doubt concerning the validity of a record, it was omitted.
Completeness_Report:
During each year, we conducted surveys (i.e., three point counts per point) for breeding birds at most of the extant survey points. In rare cases, inclement weather prevented three visits to each point. We were unable to visit all points in all years due to logistical constraints (e.g., severe weather, impassable roads, insufficient manpower). Observers varied in the extent to which they recorded birds at other locations or times (i.e., not during point counts).

Methodology_Keyword: fixed-radius point counts
Methodology_Description:
We surveyed birds during the breeding seasons (late May through June) with 75-meter (2002-2004) or 100-meter (2005-2014) fixed-radius point counts. We established 179 survey points in 2001 that also were visited in 2002, and added additional points in most years through 2010. Most point centers were placed >350 meters apart. During each visit, we recorded by sound or sight all birds using terrestrial habitat within the survey area. Point counts were conducted only in calm weather, and few were conducted >3.5 hours after dawn. Points were sampled three times per year for five minutes (2002-2004) or eight minutes (2005-2014) per visit. Survey points were located along the full elevational gradient of the canyons we sampled, typically with two or three points per 100 meters of vertical elevation change. Points were positioned in order to sample the dominant vegetation types in proportion to the approximate extent of each vegetation type. Dominant vegetation was consistent within the point. We estimated the geographic coordinates (measured in Universal Transverse Mercator units; UTMs) of each survey point with a global positioning system.

As reflected in this data file, numerous birds were detected during fixed-radius point counts but outside the radius of the sample point or flying over the point rather than apparently using resources within the point. Birds were detected before or after point counts, while observers were traveling to point-count locations, or at other times while observers were in the field. In some cases, juveniles (individuals that are not included within the current year’s breeding population) were recorded. Observers were encouraged to document all incidental observations in as much detail as possible (e.g., time of day, location, age class).

Data on vegetation structure and composition within 30 meters of the centers of the established, long-term point-count locations are available (Fleishman [2015b]). The vegetation data may be useful for exploring associations with distributions of the avifauna.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This data publication contains two comma-delimited ASCII text files:
2002-2012_incidental_birds_central.csv and 2013-2014_incidental_birds_central.csv

These files contain bird observation data collected for the years specified in the filename. In the 2002-2012 data, a dot (".") means either that the variable was not recorded or that the variable was not applicable for the data record. In most cases in the 2013-2014 data, a blank cell means that the variable was not applicable for the data record, whereas a dot (".") means that the variable was not recorded. These data contain the following variables:

OBSERVER = initials of the person who detected the bird. A dot (“.”) means that the observer was not recorded.

RANGE = mountain range or valley in which the bird was detected (Antelope Valley, Big Smoky Valley, Monitor Range, Monitor Valley, Reese River Valley, Shoshone Mountains, Toiyabe Range, or Toquima Range). "Monitor" without "Valley" indicates that the bird was detected in the Monitor Range. A dot (".") indicates that whether the bird was detected in a range or valley, and if so which range or valley, is unknown.

CANYON = canyon in which the bird was detected. Canyon names generally are consistent with those displayed on current USDA Forest Service maps. In 2002-2012 data, a dot (".") indicates that the location was not in a canyon. In 2013-2014 data, a dot (".") indicates that the canyon in which the bird was detected was not recorded or is uncertain, whereas a blank cell indicates that the location was not in a canyon.

YEAR = year of the detection (2002-2014).

DATE = date of the detection (dd-Mon-yyyy, where dd=day, Mon=name of month and yyyy=year). In some cases, the month but not the date of the detection was recorded.

POINT = if bird was detected at an established, long-term point-count location, the point of contact's shorthand reference for the location of the point. This is just a reference code for the researcher, but in most cases, numbers within a canyon increase as elevation increases. In 2002-2012 data, a dot (".") indicates the bird was not detected at an established, long-term point-count location. In the 2013-2014 data, a dot (".") indicates that the observer did not record whether the bird was detected at an established, long-term point-count location. In the 2013-2014 data, a blank cell indicates that the bird was not detected at an established, long-term point-count location.

VISIT = if bird was detected at an established, long-term point-count location, then within a given year, the sampling round (of 3 rounds) associated with the detection. A dot (".") (2002-2012) or blank cell (2013-2014) indicates not applicable (e.g. because the bird was not detected at or while in transit to an established point-count location).

TIME = if bird was detected during a point count, start time of sampling for the point (hh:mm, where hh=hour and mm=minutes). A dot (".") indicates that the bird was not detected during a point count or that the time of observation was not recorded.

WIND (2013-2014 only) = wind speed in meters per second at the start of the point count. A dot (".") indicates that the observer did not record the wind speed.

TEMP (2013-2014 only) = air temperature in degrees Celsius at the start of the point count. A dot (".") indicates that the observer did not record the temperature.

SPECIES CODE = four-letter species code from English and Scientific Alpha Codes for North American Birds through the 55th AOU Supplement (2014) (www.birdpop.org/alphacodes.htm, accessed October 2014).

ENGLISH NAME = English name of species from Check-list of North America Birds, 7th edition and its supplements (//checklist.aou.org/, accessed February 2015).

SCIENTIFIC NAME = scientific name of species.

METHOD = indicates how the bird was detected (S=by sight, V=by vocalization, F=the bird flew over the point without using resources in the point [e.g., without feeding or perching]). Multiple letters (e.g., SVF or VS) indicate that the bird was detected in more than one way; the order could imply how the bird was first observed or that the bird was detected in two ways simultaneously). A dot (".") indicates that the observer did not record how the bird was detected.

DISTANCE = if bird was detected during a point count, the distance from the point center at which the bird was detected. In most years, distances were recorded in the following bins: 10=0-10 meters (m); 25=10-25 m; 50=25-50 m; 75=50-75 m; 100=75-100 m; > 75 m; > 100 m. If the bird was not detected during a point count, the distance from the observer sometimes was recorded. A dot (".") indicates that the distance from the observer was not recorded or was unknown.

OFF POINT = whether the bird was detected on an established point- count location, whether before, during, or after the count (1=yes, 0=no). In the 2013-2014 data, a dot (".") indicates that it is unknown whether the bird was detected in an established point-count location.

FLEW IN = for detections during a point count, whether the bird flew into the point during the count (1=yes, 0=no; in the 2013-2014 data, a blank cell indicates not applicable [e.g., because the bird was not detected during a point count]).

DETECT >5-8 = for detections during a point count, whether the bird was detected more than five minutes after the count started; counts end at eight minutes (1=yes, 0=no; in the 2013-2014 data, a blank cell indicates not applicable [e.g., because the bird was not detected during a point count]).

JUVENILE = whether the bird was a chick, fledgling, or juvenile (1=yes, 0=no).

UTMx = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11). A dot (".") indicates that the exact coordinate was not recorded.

UTMy = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) y (or northing) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11). A dot (".") indicates that the exact coordinate was not recorded.

APPROXIMATE UTMx = approximate Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11). If the NOTES field (see below) references a given point-count location, the UTM typically is the coordinate of that point. A blank cell indicates either not applicable (e.g., because the exact coordinate was not recorded) or that the location was believed to be too uncertain to estimate.

APPROXIMATE UTMy = approximate Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) y (or northing) coordinates (NAD83 zone 11). If the NOTES field (see below) references a given point-count location, the UTM typically is the coordinate of that point. A blank cell indicates either not applicable (e.g., because the exact coordinate was not recorded) or that the location was believed to be too uncertain to estimate.

NOTES = information on where or when the bird was observed, its sex, behavior, or other details. In many cases the location references the point of contact's shorthand reference for the fixed coordinates of one or more point-count locations, typically because the bird was observed while the observer was traveling among those sampling locations. A blank cell indicates no additional information was recorded. (In these notes, m = meters)
