Description:
Abstract:
This data publication contains raster maps of live tree basal area for each tree species along with corresponding assessment data. An efficient approach for mapping multiple individual tree species over large spatial domains was used to develop these raster datasets. The method integrates vegetation phenology derived from MODIS imagery and raster data describing relevant environmental parameters with extensive field plot data of tree species basal area to create maps of tree species abundance and distribution at a 250-meter (m) pixel size for the contiguous United States. The approach uses the modeling techniques of k-nearest neighbors and canonical correspondence analysis, where model predictions are calculated using a weighting of nearest neighbors based on proximity in a feature space derived from the model. The approach also utilizes a stratification derived from the 2001 National Land-Cover Database tree canopy cover layer.
Purpose:
The mapping methodology and resultant datasets were intended to address three major issues. 1) Land use policy decisions are often made at the landscape scale because landscape processes, like risk of forest pests or fire, occur over large areas. 2) Distribution and abundance information is often needed for individual species as opposed to forest types because individual species can play significant roles in natural systems, may have high economic impact, or may be indicators for ecosystem health. 3) The maintenance of a realistic species covariance structure across a set of maps of individual species is important because species assemblage information is used in coarse scale modeling of ecosystem processes like response to disturbance, urbanization, and climate change.

Classification_System_Modifications:
The species codes and names in this data publication are defined in the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Database (see Woudenberg et al. [2010], in the Source Information section). However, some of the scientific names are not accepted in ITIS. We went ahead and used the ITIS accepted name for the taxonomy, but show the list of disrecepancies below.

Each species of concern is shown as: FIA scientific name (common name) - ITIS accepted scientific name (common name)

1. Acacia farnesiana (sweet acacia) - Vachellia farnesiana var. farnesiana (sweet acacia)

2. Acer barbatum (Florida maple) - Acer saccharum var. saccharum (sugar maple)

3. Carya alba (mockernut hickory) - Carya tomentosa (mockernut hickory)

4. Carya carolinae-septentrionalis (southern shagbark hickory) - Carya ovata var. australis (shagbark hickory, ...)

5. Carya ovalis (red hickory) - Carya glabra (pignut hickory, sweet pitnut)

6. Casuarina lepidophloia (belah) - Casuarina cristata (belah)

7. Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (Alaska-yellow-cedar) - Callitropsis nootkatensis (Alaska cedar)

8. Quercus margarettiae (dwarf post oak) - Quercus margarettae (runner oak, sand post oak)

9. Quercus sinuata (durand oak) - Quercus durandii var. durandii (bastard oak)

10. Taxodium ascendens (pondcypress) - Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium (bald cypress, cypress)

11. Quercus prinus (chestnut oak) - there was no acceptable taxonomy and nomenclature for this species in ITIS, but we did include it in the taxonomy below.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
A comprehensive comparative assessment was conducted at 4 spatial scales for all 323 individual live tree species basal area datasets using field plot data from the national Forest Inventory and Analysis program. The assessment follows the methodology described in Riemann et al. (2010).

The results are presented as both a summary table (global assessment; \Data\summary_table_all.xlsx or \Data\*.csv) and as a series of text files (\Data\RasterMapCIs\*.csv) that can be joined to the corresponding geometry file as an attribute table (local assessment; \Data\RasterMaps\*.img) enabling the mapping of uncertainty within a GIS application.

Riemann, Rachel; Wilson, Barry Tyler; Lister, Andrew; Parks, Sarah. 2010. An effective assessment protocol for continuous geospatial datasets of forest characteristics using USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data. Remote Sensing of Environment. 114: 2337-2352.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Validation results suggest strong agreement between the estimates produced from the forest inventory plots and those from the imputed maps, particularly for more common tree species and for areas in the middle of their range, with weaker agreement for less common species and for areas near the boundaries of their range. The level of agreement depends upon scale, as well as thematic resolution, with better results when assessing larger aggregations of species.
Completeness_Report:
At this time, the assessment data for species 814 are not available.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Several other raster datasets were used in the development of these data, along with FIA field plot data. Uncertainty in the geographic registration in each of these data sources will contribute to the positional accuracy of the final product. Overall horizontal positional accuracy is expected to be within 1 pixel in either dimension (i.e. 250 meters).

Process_Description:
The methodology utilized outputs from an ecological ordination model that related live tree measurements made on FIA field plots collected over the period of 2000-2009 (response variables), see Woudenberg et al. (2010), with the associated environmental factors (predictor variables) at each plot location, such as seasonal temperatures and precipitation from the Daymet model, landscape position from the Elevation Derivatives for National Applications (EDNA) dataset, USEPA Level III ecological regions, and vegetation phenology derived from MODIS satellite imagery. These outputs, along with tree canopy cover information from the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD), were used to impute forest carbon stock estimates derived for individual field plots to each pixel in the raster map.

A complete description of the mapping methodology, including data sources used, can be found in Wilson et al. (2012).

The 25k scale is 134,000 acres (n=6030 hexes), 50k scale is 535,000 acres (n=1615 hexes), 100k scale is 2.14 million acres (n=398 hexes), and 200k scale is 8.65 million acres (n=165 hexes). Below is a list and description of the variables in these files.

[scale] = scale defined by tessellation of the area by a hexagonal mesh with various spacing of hexagon centers, which can be 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers, or 200 kilometers.

Common Name = Common species name.
Scientific Name = Scientific species name.
Spp code = Species code.
Plots_pct = Percentage of plots on which the species occurs.
Avg_ba = Mean basal area (square feet/acre) for the species on plots where the species occurs.
AC_[scale] = Agreement coefficient (larger values indicate better agreement, max=1).
AC_sys_[scale] = Systematic agreement (larger values indicate better agreement, max=1).
AC_uns_[scale] = Unsystematic agreement (larger values indicate better agreement, max=1).
KS_[scale] = Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic (smaller values indicate better agreement, min=0).
RMSE_[scale] = Root mean squared error (square feet/acre).
R2_[scale] = R-squared.
Diff_[scale] = Mean difference between plot- and model-derived hex means (square feet/acre, negative numbers indicate modeled mean is greater than plot mean).
propCI_[scale] = Mean variability of that species ba within hexes, where propCI = the proportion of the plot-based mean represented by the 90% confidence interval.

\Data\RasterMaps\s[Spp code].img:
ERDAS image files containing raster maps of live tree basal area for a given tree species, where [Spp code] = USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) species code that ranges from 10-999.

\Data\RasterMapsCIs\s[Spp code]_[scale]k_confidence.csv:
Comma-delimited ASCII text files containing confidence intervals calculated for the estimates based on the field plots found in each hexagon at the 216,500 hectare scale (finest scale used). Below is a list and description of the variables in these files.

[scale] = scale defined by tessellation of the area by a hexagonal mesh with various spacing of hexagon centers, which can be 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers, 100 kilometers, or 200 kilometers.

[Spp code] = USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) species code that ranges from 10-999.

NA=not applicable.

proj_ID[scale]k = Hex identification number (used to join the .csv file to the hex .shp file for the given scale.
plot_s[Spp code] = Plot-based estimate for the hex, such as mean plot basal area (square feet/acre) for species s[Spp code] within that hex.
map_s[Spp code] = Map based estimate for the hex, such as mean map basal area (square feet/acre) for species s[Spp code], using only those map pixels corresponding with FIA plot locations.
CI99_s[Spp code] = Size of the 99% confidence interval (square feet/acre) associated with the plot-based estimate for species within that hex.
CI95_s[Spp code] = Size of the 95% confidence interval (square feet/acre) associated with the plot-based estimate for species within that hex.
CI90_s[Spp code] = Size of the 90% confidence interval (square feet/acre) associated with the plot-based estimate for species within that hex.
prCI90s[Spp code] = Size of the 90% confidence interval with respect to the mean plot basal area/acre, expressed as a proportion (i.e. for species 10: CI90_s10/plot_s10).
CIcIs_s[Spp code] = Class code identifying where the map-based estimate falls with respect to the plot-based confidence interval. Definitions of this class code:

-3 = Map-based estimate is lower than the plot-based estimate minus the 99% confidence interval.
-2 = Map-based estimate is lower than the plot-based estimate minus the 95% confidence interval, but above the plot-based estimate minus the 99% confidence interval.
-1 = Map-based estimate is lower than the plot-based estimate minus the 90% confidence interval, but above the plot-based estimate minus the 95% confidence interval.
0 = Map-based estimate is within the 90% confidence interval around the plot-based estimate.
1 = Map-based estimate is higher than the plot-based estimate plus the 90% confidence interval, but below the plot-based estimate plus the 95% confidence interval.
2= Map-based estimate is higher than the plot-based estimate plus the 95% confidence interval, but below the plot-based estimate plus the 99% confidence interval.
3 = Map-based estimate is higher than the plot-based estimate plus the 99% confidence interval.
4 = Plot-based estimate and the map-based estimate are both zero.
5 = Plot-based estimate is zero and the map-based estimate is greater than zero.

\Data\SHPfiles\conus_hex[scale]k.shp (and associated GIS files):
Hexagonal mesh geometry shapefiles containing comparative assessment estimation units at 4 scales, where [scale] = 25, 50, 100, or 200 kilometers.

More information on the basal area attribute depicted in these raster data sets can be found in Wilson et al. (2012) which describes the mapping methodology.
