Abstract:
- This study examines relationships to place between residents of Yakutat, Alaska and the Situk River. It documents an assessment of local perspectives on use, conflict, and management issues on the river. Initial semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with targeted community members in 2004 to gain an understanding of local perspectives. These interviews were used to help develop a quantitative survey of 225 random community members in 2005. This data publication contains the results of the quantitative survey, which includes data such as actual and preferred activities in the area, level of management services of facilities, desired changes in management services, the importance of the Situk River to the community, and similar local perspectives.
-
Purpose:
- The purpose of the Situk River, Yakutat Resident Study was to assess locals' experiences and perceptions of conditions on the Situk River; to measure perceived impacts and tolerances for those impacts; to understand locals' relationships to the river and how those relationships differ across the Yakutat community; to assess their opinions about management strategies; and to assess how their relationships to the Situk River are influenced by management decisions.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- Yakutat is a borough at the center of a small-scale fishing society in Alaska. As of 2010, the population was 662, although the area covers around 9,463 square miles. Yakutat borders the Gulf of Alaska to the west, to which the Situk River flows as a watershed draining out of the city. The borough contains part of the protected areas of Chugach National Forest, Glacier Bay National Park, Glacier Bay Wilderness, Tongass National Forest, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Wrangell-Saint Elias Wilderness and the Russell Fjord Wilderness.
See the 2005 survey questionnaire for a map of the study area (\Supplements\The_Situk_River_Yakutat_Resident_Study_Survey_2005.pdf).

- Some respondents are missing id numbers, such as respondent 3, 11, 12, and 69. Those missing ids are also missing the interviewer number, although not response data.
Depending on the question, response values of '0', '9' and '-1' may mean there was no response. The missing value is indicated next to the description of that variable in the Entity & Attributes section of this metadata.

Methodology_Description:
- The research was conducted in two stages: a qualitative interview phase and a quantitative survey phase. The population of interest was defined as all persons living within the Situk River watershed, particularly in the community of Yakutat, in Southeast Alaska during the study period.
1. Qualitative interviews were conducted in Yakutat, AK between October 15th and 19th, 2004. One researcher conducted eight semi-structured in-depth interviews, averaging 30 minutes each. The interviews took place in the community at a variety of locations including public buildings, the community boat dock, a public park bench, and in a private home. A mix of key informant and purposeful convenience sampling approaches were used determine interviewees. The local Yakutat Tlingit tribal planner identified three key community members for the researcher that were knowledgeable about management issues and would offer differing viewpoints of conditions and preferences. The tribal planner described the research to the three potential respondents prior to the researcher's arrival in Yakutat to do the interviews. Two additional key informants were chosen based on the researcher's familiarity with their positions of leadership in the community. The researcher chose another three respondents from the community at large to be interviewed. They were chosen to represent typical residents with a diversity of perspectives, likely somewhat different from those of the key informants. Topics covered included: general descriptive questions about the respondents, what the Situk River meant and why it was important to them, what types of activities they pursued on the river, what types of conflicts they experienced, and how they felt about the various agencies that manage the Situk River. The interviews transcripts are not available based on a promise of anonymity, but the results of the interviews helped to improve the quantitative survey (see below).
Following the interviews, a questionnaire was developed that was similar to the one used in the Situk Recreation Visitor Study, but was adapted to be more relevant for the local community based on the interview responses.
2. On-site data collection took place in Yakutat between February 28th and March 5th, 2005. Four interviewers generally worked in teams and went to randomly chosen residences according to the pre-determined sampling schedules. The questionnaires were usually left with the respondents for them to fill out and then picked up a short time later the same day. At the start of the study randomly selected households were chosen to participate in the study. But as the sampling progressed, the criterion for targeting households was relaxed to include sampling from every, rather than every other, occupied household. This process resulted in a total of 225 completed and usable questionnaires from community members.
