Description:

Abstract:
- These data document observed presence of butterflies in selected transects throughout the Rim Fire boundary in the Stanislaus National Forest, California. Data were collected from 2014 to 2015. Records for each year reflect five visits at about 10-14 day intervals from late May or early June through late July. Data include species detected, date, location, whether the individual was taking nectar, and if so, the nectar source and location.
-
Purpose:
- Data were collected to examine relationships between abundance and occupancy of butterflies and environmental attributes including canopy cover, live ground cover, and nectar source abundance. Data also were collected to investigate whether soil and vegetation burn severity affected those same environmental attributes. Knowledge of how fire affects environmental attributes that determine the abundance and distribution of butterflies can be used to inform fire management practices for endangered and threatened species of butterflies.
-
Supplemental_Information:
- The vegetation data, which serve as environmental covariates for this butterfly data, were collected at all locations where butterflies were sampled. The data publication containing these vegetation data is 'Post-fire vegetation attributes in the Rim Fire, Stanislaus National Forest, California’ (Pavlik 2016).
Original metadata date was 07/08/2016. Minor metadata updates on 12/16/2016.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
- Detections are estimated to be more than 95% true. On the basis of GPS units (Trimble Geoexplorer 2 and Garmin GSPMAP 62s and 64s) and methods used, coordinates of the bottom and top of each transect are estimated to be accurate within approximately 5 meters horizontal.
-
Logical_Consistency_Report:
- Data collected in 2014 and 2015 were collected by a total of four observers, including the data author, and reviewed by the author. Voucher specimens were checked and questionable records were omitted. These data have been included in a master’s degree thesis and two manuscripts currently under review for publication. To the best of the author's knowledge, the vast majority of inconsistencies have been eradicated.
-
Completeness_Report:
- In rare cases a survey of a given transect was completed > 14 days after the previous survey. Generally, it was because weather conditions did not meet the criteria for sampling.
In a few cases data were not recorded during the initial survey in 2014. Protocol was modified in the early stages of data collection.
Four additional transects were surveyed in 2015 that were not surveyed in 2014.

Methodology_Description:
- Data for this study were collected within the Rim Fire boundary of the Stanislaus National Forest. The Rim Fire occurred from August through October 2013 and burned over 1040 square kilometers of land. Random selection of sampling locations was not possible due to steep topography, the lack of roads, and limited time available for travel. In 2014, we established eight 300-500 meter (m) transects along which pre-fire vegetation composition and structure appeared to have been homogenous. We established an additional four transects within the same range of lengths in 2015. Transect length varied because in some cases we could not locate 500 m with apparently homogenous pre-fire vegetation composition and structure. Transects were placed along vegetated or non-vegetated dirt roads or trails. The elevation of each transect ranged from approximately 1350 to 1450 m. In all but one case, the endpoints of different transects were separated by ≥ 100 m. The maximum linear distance between transects was approximately 24 kilometers (km).
We sampled each transect that was established in 2014 five times during June and July 2014 and we sampled all transects five times from May through July 2015, which encompassed the majority of the butterfly flight seasons in those years. We divided each transect into 20-m segments, which were the sample units for analysis. During each survey, an observer walked along the transect and identified each butterfly observed within 10 m on either side (Pollard and Yates 1993). We noted whether each butterfly was taking nectar, and, if so, the species on which it was feeding. In some cases, the same individual was observed taking nectar from more than one plant species. We estimated abundance as the total number of individuals of each species that we observed during the season. It is possible that a small number of individuals were recorded on more than one survey day, but we considered this situation unlikely given the time between surveys and the fact that in temperate ecosystems, the average lifespan of an adult butterfly is about one week.

\Data\rim-fire-butterflies.csv
Comma-delimited ASCII text file containing butterfly presence data. These data contain the following variables:
OBSERVER = the initials of the person who recorded the butterfly.
YEAR = year of the detection (2014-2015).
DATE = date of the detection (month/day/year).
VISIT = within a given year, the sequential visit to the transect or segment during which the butterfly was detected (1-5).
TRANSECT = name identifier used by the data author.
SPECIES_NAME = scientific name of the species. Each line represents an individual. (none=no butterflies detected)
SEGMENT = distance from the start of the transect (in 20 meter intervals) that the individual was observed. If the individual was observed in more than one segment, all segments are reported. A “.” (dot) signifies that data were not collected.
TAKING_NECTAR = indicates if the individual was observed using a nectar source. (N=no, Y=yes, NA=no butterflies detected)
NECTAR_SOURCE = scientific name of the nectar source. (NA=individual was not taking nectar)
NECTAR_POSITION = transect segment that the individual was observed using the nectar source (NA=individual was not taking nectar).
UTMx_START = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinate for the start of the transect (NAD83 zone 11).
UTMy_START = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) y (or northing) coordinate for the start of the transect sampled (NAD83 zone 11).
UTMx_END = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinate for the end of the transect sampled (NAD83 zone 11).
UTMy_END = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) x (or easting) coordinate for the end of the transect sampled (NAD83 zone 11).
