Abstract:
- This data package contains data used for the publication "An insect outbreak shifts the direction of selection from fast to slow growth rates in the long-lived conifer Pinus ponderosa" (de la Mata et al. 2017). The study includes measurements from 204 half-sibling families planted in a common garden experiment planted in 1974 and last measured in 2013. The study site is located at the University of Montana's Lubrecht Experimental Forest in Montana, USA as part of the Inland Empire Tree Improvement Cooperative Program. Data are available for family rankings of ponderosa pine survival before and after a mountain pine beetle outbreak and mean family diameter and height at ages 2, 4, 11, 16, 21, and 27.
-
Purpose:
- These data were collected as part of a long-term genetic trial to monitor half-sibling ponderosa pine family growth performance. A mountain pine beetle outbreak affected the study beginning in 2005 and ultimately killed 35% of the trees in the trial. Additional data collection was made in 2013 to determine if there were differences in survival among families and the phenotypic and genotypic relationships between tree growth and survival.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- Seeds were collected from trees in 44 natural stands in western Montana and northern Idaho, reared at the USDA Forest Service tree nursery in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and then planted at the University of Montana’s Lubrecht Experimental Forest. The coordinates provided represent the area where the trees were planted, which is also the location of the mountain pine beetle attack.

- All data reported were collected within the same common garden genetic trial using the same family codes.
-
Completeness_Report:
- Any missing data are denoted with a “.”, but there is very minimal missing data (actually only 1 data value). We were only interested in survival, so once a tree died it was not measured again and this was also denoted with a “.”.
The tree_afterMPB.csv contains only a list trees that survived until the onset of the mountain pine beetle outbreak and were used to calculate spatial dependence of beetle attack.

Methodology_Description:
- Experimental design:
The study was conducted in a P. ponderosa common garden half-sibling genetic trial planted at the University of Montana’s Lubrecht Experimental Forest in western Montana, USA by the Inland Empire Tree Improvement Cooperative (IETIC). Seeds were collected from 204 open-pollinated, unrelated wild mother trees phenotypically selected for superior growth and form in 44 natural stands in western Montana and Northern Idaho and reared at the USDA Forest Service tree nursery in Coeur d’Alene (Idaho, USA). One-year-old bare-root seedlings were planted in 1974 on a 3 × 3 meter (m) spacing using a randomized complete block design with 4-tree family-row plots in each of 5 blocks for a targeted total of 20 trees per family (4,025 trees in total; some families did not have 20 trees planted due to limited seedlings). Additional planting of containerized 2-year-old seedlings occurred in 1975 to replace mortality during the first year. A mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreak began in the region during the mid-2000s, when trees were 27 years old, and reached peak mortality in 2009 and 2010 at the site when trees were 35 and 36 years old (trees are fully reproductive at this age).

Methodology_Description:
- Data Collection:
Growth and survival were surveyed six times at ages 2, 4, 11, 16, 21 and 27. Tree height was measured at age 2, tree height and diameter at 30 centimeters (cm) above ground was measured at age 4, and then height and diameter at breast height (DBH; 1.38 m above ground) were measured at subsequent ages. No MPB caused-mortality was documented through age 27. At each survey time, tree status was recorded as either 0 = dead or 1 = live.
In June 2013, we mapped each tree using a submetric accuracy GPS device (Trimble® Geo HX). For each tree, we determined live or dead status and whether death occurred before 2001 (prior to the outbreak) or after. MPB-killed trees were mass attacked and identified based on abundant resin pitch tubes. We retrospectively determined the approximate year of successful attack (> 2001-2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) based on needle presence and color, and twig and bark characteristics (Table S1 from de la Mata et al. 2017). We assumed year of death was one year following attack. This was corroborated by crossdating increment cores collected from a subsample of about 200 trees using dendrochronological techniques (50) and trees that were mass attacked the same year of sampling and still green were checked the following year to corroborate their death. A 100% match was found with our estimates of death. Mortality after age 27 (2001) was exclusively due to MPB; therefore, survival after beetle attack was used both as a proxy of fitness when coupled with survival in previous years and as a proxy of tree resistance during the outbreak by including only live trees.
This resulted in a data file consisting of a list of trees that survived until the onset of the mountain pine beetle outbreak and status (i.e., live or dead) of those trees at age 34, 35, 36, 37, and 38. Then from those 2467 trees, 106 elite trees (trees selected for breeding purposes based on superior growth) were sprayed at age 36 years with Carbaryl, thus conferring them artificial resistance to the MPB. See de la Mata et al. 2017; SI Text: Accounting for the Insecticide Effect for more detailed information.

- Individual tree heights and diameters of living trees were averaged within each family for the years prior to the MPB attack. These family-level height and diameter averages, along with the standard error of these averages and survival rates were calculated and included in this data publication download. Only living trees were used to calculate family average heights and diameters.
