Description:
Abstract:
This data publication contains high resolution temperature data via infrared thermography for the super highly instrumented plots (SHIPs) within four small replicate grass fires (S-units) burned in 2012 as part of the Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment (RxCADRE). These data include infrared images and comma-delimited ASCII text files consisting of an array (x,y) of temperature values (z) representing pixels of the IR imaging device. The thermal data were obtained from a 4 x 4 meter super highly instrumented plot within each of the 100 x 200 meter S-units S5, S7, S8, and S9 at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
Purpose:
These data were collected to provide fine scale temperature measurements within the S-units. They provide detailed information on fire intensities and behavior within the S-units. These measurements coincided with an array of other fire behavior measurements from other devices to meet objectives of the RxCADRE experiment.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Default numeric values are input into the temperature array as 299.998 Celsius (C) for S5 and 300 C for S7-S9. A value matching the default means the camera did not detect a temperature greater than the default for that particular pixel. The temperature ranges calibrated for these data are 300-1500 C. Values outside of these ranges are not calibrated and should be ignored.

The cameras were calibrated prior to the experiment and the data were examined to cofirm realistic values based on fire behavior from previous studies and other sensors deployed around the highly instrumented plots (HIPS).

CAMERA INFORMATION:

Infrared Camera = FLIR S60
Resolution = 320 x 240 pixels
Lens = 45 x 34 degree
Lens spatial resolution = 1.3 milliradians
Spectral range = 7.5-13 nanometres
Record Rate = 1.0 hertz (hz) for S5, and 0.25 hz for S7, S8, and S9

Methodology_Description:
DATA COLLECTION PROCESS:

The infrared cameras were mounted nadir 8.2 meters above the HIPS on a large tripod system. The cameras and tripods were deployed before the burn was initiated. Once the burn was started the cameras were manually started and began recording images. The images were recorded at a target rate of 1 hz for S5 and 0.25 hz for S7-S9. The S5 burn occurred on November 1, 2012 (julian day 306). The S7, S8, and S9 burns occurred on November 7, 2012 (julian day 312).

The FLIR camera took an image and reported a temperature for each pixel. Therefore each image represents an array of pixels with each pixel having a temperature value recorded by the infrared camera. The files within each folder for each plot represent an image where the camera view was fixed.

DATA FILES (CSV):
\Data\S5_bmp\S5_SHIP_#.csv: 105 comma-delimited ASCII text files (CSV) associated with the BMP single image captured by the infrared camera on the super highly instrumented plots at S5. These CSV files contain metadata (in the first 5 rows) and temperature data for their associated BMP file. (# = 1-105)

DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS OF THESE *.CSV files:
A header is present in only the S5 *.csv files (S7, S8, and S8 all have time stamp files that provide the time the image was taken). Header information includes:
Row 1: File name = path where the data were originally stored.
Row 2: Units = Temperature (Celsius).
Row 3: Time = day of year:hours:minutes:seconds (ddd:hh:mm:ss.ssssss) when image was taken. (Time is GMT + 00:00 or Zulu time).
Row 4: Framenumber = sequential order of the images (e.g. frame = image).
Row 5: Preset = a default header output. It is meaningless in this dataset hence always zero. (It is used to define specific parameters available with other FLIR camera platforms.)

Data within all *.CSV files:
Row 1 (or Row 7): The temperature value array is 320 columns by 240 rows. The temperature value array directly corresponds to the resolution (pixel) of the image produced by the infrared camera. The array represents coordinates (x,y) and temperature values (z) for each pixel in the image. Default numeric values are input into the array as 299.998 Celcius (C) (for S5) or 300.0 C (for S7-S9). A value matching the default means that the camera did not detect a temperature greater than the default for that particular pixel. The temperature range calibrated in this data set is 300-1500 C. Values outside the range of 300-1500 C are not calibrated and should be ignored.

ADDITIONAL DATA FILES (CSV):
\Data\S7_bmp\S7_SHIP_TimeStamp.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text file (CSV) that lists the S7 IR_# filenames and the timestamp associated with that image (hh:mm:ss, where hh=hour, mm=minutes, and ss=seconds).

\Data\S8_bmp\S8_SHIP_TimeStamp.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text file (CSV) that lists the S8 IR_# filenames and the timestamp associated with that image (hh:mm:ss, where hh=hour, mm=minutes, and ss=seconds).

\Data\S9_bmp\S9_SHIP_TimeStamp.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text file (CSV) that lists the S9 IR_# filenames and the timestamp associated with that image (hh:mm:ss, where hh=hour, mm=minutes, and ss=seconds).

* Note: we do not have a time stamp file for S5 because the information is contained within the header of these files.
