Description:
Abstract:
The Beaver Creek Pinery (BCP) is a ponderosa pine and black oak dominated stand in the Ishi Wilderness, Lassen National Forest, California. It has never been logged and due to its remoteness, has experienced more fire than many other such forests. Fires in 1990 and 1994 killed a substantial proportion of the ingrowth that is common in many other fire excluded stands, restoring a structure that is believed to be similar to what was found under historic fire regimes. This data publication contains measurements of tree, understory vegetation, and coarse woody debris variables taken in July of 1998 in the BCP, and may provide a useful reference for structural restoration of forests at similar elevations and of similar species composition.
Purpose:
The purpose of this project was to quantify the composition and structure of overstory and understory vegetation in a contemporary reference stand that experienced numerous fires in the 20th century. Among the variables of interest were the density of various tree size classes as well as the heterogeneity and spatial patterns of different structures (overstory and understory) within this stand.
Supplemental_Information:
These data were collected with the intent of periodic re-measurement. The plots are being re-measured during the summer/fall of 2016 as part of a Joint Fire Science Program funded study, and may be re-measured again in the future, for example, following disturbance/fire.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The data were collected by experienced research teams, and are therefore considered to have good accuracy. Attribute accuracy is tested by manual comparison of the digital data with hard copy plot data. Multiple queries were performed to check the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of the data.

Tree heights were measured with a clinometer to the nearest foot. Tree diameters were measured at breast height (DBH) with a diameter tape to the nearest 0.1 inch.

Mistletoe was given a rating between 0-3. It is quite possible that the Hawksworth 6 point scale was used (Hawksworth 1961), with no trees found with mistletoe scores > 3. Most other USFS PSW (Redding lab) studies use the Hawksworth scale. However, no notes on what the numbers mean could be located. Only four trees had a mistletoe score.

For understory shrubs, one field crew initially estimated cover by vertical projection of the tallest layer, with all values summing to 100%, whereas a second crew estimated cover of shrubs irrespective of what was on the ground under the shrubs, meaning that total cover could sum to >100%. Cover estimates for plots with values summing to > 100% were later adjusted so that they too summed to 100%. In 2016, we noticed that values for two plots still did not sum to 100% - these were adjusted proportionally so that the values summed to 100%. Given the inconsistencies, all cover values collected in 1998 should be considered only a rough approximation of reality.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Digital data were checked for erroneous entries.
Completeness_Report:
For tree data:

Total height (feet [ft]) and height to live crown (ft) were initially measured on all live trees in each plot (plots 70-92, 70-73, 71-92, 71-93), but thereafter measured on only the first live tree of each species encountered, clockwise from North.

Though all live trees were to be tagged at breast height (snags were not tagged), two live black oaks in plot 77-02 were not tagged.

Tree condition codes (live trees only) were used to note special characteristics, but is otherwise blank.

If the tree was dead, snag decay was categorized by stages, according to Thomas et al. 1979. Otherwise, this field was left blank.

For tree age data:

For the first three plots (gridpoints 72-02, 72-01, and 72-00), the closest two trees in each layer were cored. Sampling was thereafter reduced to only the closest one in each layer. Also, for unknown reasons, sampling included six trees located at greater distance from the gridpoint than the specified maximum radius of 131.2 feet (40 meters [m]).

Not all trees that were aged were tagged because the tree age data were collected in a larger radius plot than the other tree data. Tree number is included only for aged trees that happen to also occur within the tree plot.

Methodology_Description:
Detailed methodology is also available in the protocol included with the data publication.

A total of 107 points, geo-referenced to an accuracy of 15 centimeters (cm), were surveyed on a 100 x 100 meter (m) grid across the Beaver Creek Pinery by Del Terra Inc. before initial data collection. Each was permanently monumented with a brass cap inscribed with the UTM coordinate.

Large trees (> 11.6 in diameter at breast height [DBH]) were evaluated in a 0.2 acre (52.7 foot [ft] radius) plot and small trees (DBH > 3.5 and < 11.6) were evaluated in a 0.05 acre (26.3 ft radius) plot, both centered on the gridpoint. Species (ponderosa pine or black oak) and status (live or dead) of each tree was noted and live trees were tagged at breast height. Standing dead trees (snags) were not tagged. Diameter at breast height (inches) was measured. Total height (feet) and height to live crown (feet) were measured on the first live tree of each species encountered, clockwise from North. Total height was measured on all snags.

Tree seedlings (< 4.5 ft tall) and saplings (> 4.5 ft tall and < 3.5 in DBH) were counted by species and size class within a 0.01 acre (11.8 ft radius) plot. For seedlings, size classes were 1 = 1-2 ft, 2 = 2-3 ft, and 3 = 3-4.5 ft. Seedlings less than 1 ft tall were considered ephemeral and not counted. For saplings, size classes were 1 = 0-1.5 in DBH, 2 = 1.6-2.5 in DBH, and 3 = 2.6-3.5 in DBH.

Cover of litter, bare ground, rock, coarse woody debris (CWD = downed wood > 6 in dbh at the small end), grasses, forbs, and shrubs by individual species were also estimated within the 0.01 acre (11.8 ft radius) plot, to the nearest 5%.

Total length and midpoint diameter of all CWD (> 6 inches diameter at small end) having the midpoint fall within the 0.05 acre (26.3 ft radius) plot were measured.

Tree age data were collected at a subset of gridpoints (28 of 107), systematically spread across the pinery (mostly every other gridpoint sampled in every other row of gridpoints). From the gridpoint, the closest tree in each layer was identified (within a 131.2 ft [40 m] radius for layers 1-3, and a 32.8 ft (10 m) radius for layer 4), and the azimuth and distance to that tree measured. Layers were identified by tree size & age categories (1A = very platy bark, 80+ ft tall; 1B = platy bark beginning to form, 80+ ft tall; 2 = bark with no plates, 50 to 100 ft tall; 3 = 20 to 50 ft tall; 4 = less than 20 ft tall, often in dense clumps). If no trees for that layer were located within these specified distances, no data were collected. For ponderosa pine trees in layers 1-3, one increment core was extracted, at either 20 cm (7.9 inches [in]) or 100 cm (39.4 in) above ground (documented). For ponderosa pine trees in layer 4, number of branch whorls were counted instead of taking an increment core.
