Description:
Abstract:
This data package contains surface fuel maps created as a research product of the 2011 and 2012 Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment (RxCADRE). Maps are located in Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) near Valparaiso, Florida. GeoTiffs are provided for each of five management blocks that were burned by Eglin AFB managers who applied a total of five operational prescribed surface fires in 2011 (forested blocks 608A and 703C), and 2012 (non-forested blocks L1G and L2G and forested block L2F).
Purpose:
The Prescribed Fire Combustion and Atmospheric Dynamics Research Experiment (RxCADRE) was designed to collect atmospheric, fuels, fire behavior, energy balance, emissions, and fire effects data to evaluate and advance fire models and further our understanding of fire science questions. Surface fuel maps were created so that surface fuel consumption could be compared to fire radiative energy density.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Within Measurement Uncertainty: For details regarding accuracy of clip plot fuel measurements, see Ottmar and Restaino (2014); for details regarding accuracy of lidar data measurements, see Hudak et al. (2015). The 2011 clip plot location data were recorded with field-grade Garmin GPS units using waypoint averaging to record locations to within 1-2 meter accuracy, while the 2012 clip plot data were located via resource-grade Trimble GeoXT units with the ability to differentially correct locations to within 0.25-meter accuracy.

Between Measurement Uncertainty: The model used to predict total surface fuel loads across the full extent of the lidar collections explained 32% of the variance in total surface fuel load at measured clip plot locations, with a RMSE of 3.73 Milligrams per hectare (Hudak et al. 2016).

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Three small burn blocks (S3, S4 and S5) were burned on 1 November 2012, 2 days before the lidar survey; therefore, clip plot fuel measures at the 75 clip plots surrounding these three blocks were excluded from the predictive model (Hudak et al. 2016).

Completeness_Report:
By design, there were 12 pre- and post-fire clip plots established at the highly instrumented plots (HIP) established in the L2F block burned in 2012. However, there are only 11 plot observations for L2F-HIP3 because plot 12 was never established.

Process_Description:
The creation of surface fuel maps from sample plots and airborne lidar data is described in Hudak et al. (2016). Briefly, surface fuel loads, as measured on clip plots in 2011 and 2012 by Ottmar and Restaino (2014), were predicted from lidar data acquired 5-6 February, 2011 and November 3, 2012 (Hudak et al. 2015) via multiple linear regression modeling, using nine statistical metrics of surface fuel height and density derived from the lidar points within 3-meter (m) radius of the clip plot centers (Hudak and Bright 2015). Models were then applied to the entire lidar dataset, from which the same metrics were generated from the lidar points binned within 2.5-m x 2.5-m raster grid cells, to map surface fuel.

Surface fuel loads were measured by destructive harvesting in 1x1-m clip plots within all burn blocks except L2F, where clip plots were 0.5-m x 0.5-m. The pre- and post-fire clip plot positions alternated across a given sample unit, so consumption could not be estimated at the plot level (i.e. consumption estimates were limited in resolution to the sample unit level). A sample unit consisted of a set of clip plots arranged systematically in one of three configurations: (1) surrounding a 40-m x 40-m (2011) or 20-m x 20-m (2012) highly instrumented plot (HIP) that was randomly located within a representative fuel condition inside a large burn block with two (2011) or three HIPs (2012) per large burn block; (2) surrounding a 200x200-m small burn block (S7, S8, and S9); or (3) along parallel transects from a random starting point within a large burn block (608A, L1G, L2G, and L2F). Further details on the fuel sampling protocols can be found in Ottmar et al. (2016).

Initial preprocessing of lidar data was performed by the vendor, Kucera International. Subsequent processing of lidar data necessary of the creation of this product is described in Hudak et al. (2015).
