Description:
Abstract:
This data publication includes daily infrared (IR) burned area shapefiles from 42 forest fires from 2005 to 2007 and 2011 for central Idaho and western Montana. Original files were obtained from https://ftp.nifc.gov/. Fire data were selected based on availability of burn severity (dNBR) from MTBS.gov and five days of consecutive IR perimeter mapping. Also included is a file containing the proportion values for three burn severities (low, medium, high) located in each fire growth area, as well as a file containing basic information about these 42 forest fires.
Purpose:
These maps are used on wildland fire incidents to establish fire size and location. These maps allow for daily estimated fire growth areas.

Individual IR perimeter shapefiles were inspected for consistency in fire progression. Perimeter data were processed by comparing the current day perimeter to the previous day and working backwards through time series for each group of consecutive days for each fire. Any area that indicated an inconsistent growth was removed, that is if the previous day had a larger burn area, that inconsistent area was removed.

This processing resulted in 5 or more days of consistent IR perimeter maps per fire. These consistent fire perimeters were then further processed to locate areas of daily progression/growth. For example: Day #3 perimeter – Day # 2 perimeter = fire progression/growth that occurred for Day #3. These processes resulted in four or more days of fire progression maps for each of the 42 fires.

\Data\Fires_Info.csv: Comma delimited text file containing information about the 42 wildland fires used in this research. Variable descriptions are listed below.

Fire = Fire name

Year = Year fire burned

Actual Days Sampled = number of days that fire progression occurred

Number of progression days = number of days mapped by infrared mapping

Progression Dates = dates of series of mapped days

Pre_Image = date of pre satellite image used in differenced Normalized Burn Index calculations

Post_Image = date of post satellite image used in differenced Normalized Burn Index calculations

Ignition date = Ignition date as recorded by MTBS.gov

Notes = notes and additional information

\Data\Polygon_Proportions.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text file containing proportion values for three burn severities located in each fire growth area. Variable descriptions are listed below.

Area = area in hectares(ha) of each individual Daily Burned Area as mapped by infrared (IR) wildland fire maps. Only included areas of low, moderate, and high severity.

Low = proportion of Low burn severity of corresponding Daily Burned Area

Moderate = proportion of Moderate burn severity of Daily Burned Area

High = proportion of High burn severity of Daily Burned Area

Area_Total = total area (ha) for each individual area as mapped by IR maps. This included areas not calculated within “Area” column. This included such things as increased greenness severity, masked areas, and satellite errors.

Date = 6 or 5 digit representing year, month, and day fire area burned: (yymmdd)

Year = year the fire burned

Fire = name of fire for corresponding “area”
