Description:
Abstract:
This data publication contains the location of instruments placed in the field as part of a prescribed fire research campaign conducted at the Camp Swift Military Base in Bastrop County, Texas on January 15, 2014. The Camp Swift Fire Experiment 2014 consisted of three fires ignited in burn blocks of dimensions 100 meters (m) by 100 m on January 15, 2014. Fires were ignited on relatively flat areas of grass vegetation in moderate winds. This dataset represents the locations of 289 ground instruments placed during the research burns. Each point contains additional information about the instrument geographic setup, and accuracy of recorded positions. Data associated with each instrument are available in separate data packages within the Forest Service Research Data Archive.
Purpose:
The objective of the research burns was to create a dataset comprised of ground based and remote sensing measurements. Recording of instrument locations was conducted so that individual measurements can be co-located in space with all other measurements. The majority of the instrument locations were documented with a GEOXH GeoExplorer 6000 series Trimble - differential Global Positioning System (GPS) unit. Post-processing of GPS collected data was done in Pathfinder Office 5.4. A minimum of four satellites were required for recording GPS points found in this dataset. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Smart Setting for position dilution of precision (PDOP), signal to noise ratio (SNR) and estimate of horizontal error (EHE) on the Trimble unit was selected for this site, requiring no adjustments of settings within the study area. Wide Area Augmentation Systems (WAAS) along with post-processing enhanced the precision of the data derived. A custom data dictionary for field collection was created to facilitate data collection. Locations of specific thermocouples on the rake were determined based on the thermocouple spacing and the beginning location of each thermocouple rake as recorded with a Garmin GPS unit by the Camp Swift Fire Experiment 2014, Fire Behavior Group.
Supplemental_Information:
A summary of the Camp Swift project can be found in the full data download (\Supplements\ CampSwiftFireExperiment2014_Project_Overview.pdf). A United States Forest Service ArcGIS Online interactive website is also developed to describe the study and examine the integrated data quality for the Camp Swift effort (see cross reference below). Finally, a document detailing the procedures used to set up the burn blocks can be found in the full data download (\Supplements\CampSwiftFireExperiment2014_BurnBlockDesign.pdf).

Data were measured at the Camp Swift Army Base in Bastrop County, Texas. More thorough descriptions of the Camp Swift Study Site can be found in the accompanying ArcGIS Online Story Map entitled “Camp Swift Fire Experiment 2014: Integrated Data Quality Assessment” as referenced in the cross reference section of this document. Published data were collected between January 14, 2015 and January 15, 2015. Set up of the burn blocks occurred before these dates as did initial scoping of the study area.

Manual check of attributes in ArcGIS.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Locations of instruments were checked for duplicate points.
Completeness_Report:
All ground instrument locations are found in this dataset. Thermocouple rake locations were recorded with a garmin GPS unit and do not have measures of location accuracy. The spatial locations of the thermocouple rakes, therefore, could be less accurate.

Process_Description:
The various GPS files were integrated into one file with no duplicate points and export to this File Geodatabase Feature Class. Additional information from field notes was included in various attributes for this dataset. The locations of each thermocouple rake, were found by using the most northern end of the Garmin GPS recorded locations, and then using the bearing the rake was placed to determine other points, based on the spacing between each thermocouple rake.

The ground height of the instrument was recorded from a digital elevation model produced from a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) acquisition occurring in 2008.
