Description:
Abstract:
This metadata record describes 10-meter raster riparian areas for 50-year flood heights for the conterminous United States in 2019. Fifty-year flood heights were estimated using U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream gage information. NHDPlus version 2.1 was used as the hydrologic framework to delineate riparian areas. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wetland Inventory and USGS 10-meter digital elevation models were also used in processing these data.
Purpose:
These data were created to estimate 50-year flood height riparian areas to support statistical analysis, map display, and model parameterization.
Supplemental_Information:
For additional information regarding methodologies for modeling and processing these data, see Abood et al. (2012).

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Mapping accuracy was tested by overlaying field data collected by the Nature Conservancy in the Hiawatha National Forest to the data presented here. Results compared positively with an overall mapping accuracy of 88% using collected field data. There may be inherited errors in the data set resulting from NHDPlus mapping inaccuracies such as missing streams, locational inaccuracies of stream and wetland delineations.

The source publication provided methodologies for modeling and data processing.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The basic steps are outlined below:

1) Project NHDPlus version 2.1 (streams & watersheds), NWI, and digital soil data and to USA Contiguous Albers Equal Area Conic USGS version NAD 1983.

2) File geodatabase created for processing purposes.

3) Divide the conterminous U.S. into 18 level-2 hydrologic unit code (HUC-2) watersheds based on NHDPlus v2.1 production units (HUC-2s watersheds).

4) Divide each NHDPlus v2.1 production unit HUC-2s watershed into level-10 hydrologic unit code (HUC-10) watersheds.

5) Mosaic 10-meter digital elevation models (DEMs) into 18 rasters based on 18 NHDPlus v2.1 level-2 hydrologic unit code (HUC-2) watersheds as the clipping extent.
Process_Date: 201904
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Create 1 file geodatabase for each of the 18 HUC-2 watersheds (regions) with input datasets; streams, water bodies, HUC-10 watersheds, NWI, & DEMs:

1) Filter out the NHDPlus version v2.1 NHDFlowline featureclass by retaining segments where FTYPE = ArtificialPath, Connectors, and StreamRivers categories. Delete the other categories.

2) Add “FloodData” field (type “Double”) to the NHDFlowline featureclass from Step #1.

3) Add to the file geodatabase, a watersheds featureclass: based on USGS HUC-10s watersheds within a HUC-2 watershed (region). This featureclass is the smallest riparian delineation unit used in the processing.

4) Add “SampleDistance” field (type “Long”) to the watersheds featureclass in Step #3. Set sample distance to 250 (meters) to HUC-10 featureclass.

5) Add a water bodies featureclass: derived from the NDPlus v2.1 waterbodies dataset for each HUC-2 watershed (NHDPlus v2.1 Production Unit).

6) Clip the NWI data to the specific region (HUC-2 watershed) and import.

7) Import the mosaiced 10-meter DEM for the appropriate HUC-2 region.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The Esri file geodatabase located in the "Data" folder identifies whether areas (raster cells) are classified by the model as being part of the 50-year flood height riparian zone.

The data are '0' if not in the riparian zone; '1' if in the riparian zone. When displayed on a map, riparian zone cells are color-coded 'black' with no transparency.
