Abstract:
- These data represent a study of the dominant user groups on the Main and Middle Forks of the Salmon River on the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho. Though these groups are using similar equipment and traveling on the same river at the same time, they differ in most aspects of their expectations for the trip, problems they encounter, and what they think managers should do to protect the resource. Additional questions included demographics (e.g., state of residence, income, education, profession) and group characteristics (e.g., size, type of equipment, level of experience). This survey was conducted in 1995, during the primary use season. Boat users were asked questions at the launch point, take out point, as well as on their first, third, and last night on the river. The sampling process resulted in 238 commercial clients and 301 private party members.
-
Purpose:
- The intention of the study was to support an interdisciplinary planning team focused on commercial and private boat use of these rivers. An understanding of demographics, river use history, specialization, and perceptions of crowding, resource conditions, and policies were important for managers to know about their users during this planning process.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- The Middle and Main Forks of the Salmon River in the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness (FC-RNRW) in Idaho were the focus. The “wild” section of the Middle Fork extends nearly 90 miles within the FC-RNRW. Also, within the FC-RNRW, the Main stem of the Salmon River travels for approximately 79 miles. Influential policies include the Central Idaho Wilderness Act (CIWA) of 1980 and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.

Completeness_Report:
- The survey was to be completed in sections (one part at the put-in, one part at the first night of camping, one part at the third night of camping, and one part on the final night of camping). In some cases not all sections of the survey were completed.
Answers to jet boat questions are included in these data, but only people on the Main Fork of the Salmon were asked jet boat related questions.
Missing data are recorded as blank cells and we assume this means the survey question was not answered.

Methodology_Description:
- Data were collected in 1995 during the primary use season. Ten pairs of days were randomly selected from all possible days between July 15 and September 16. This included eight sampling pairs during the summer permit season and two sampling pairs in September, outside the summer permit season. On the Main Fork of the river the maximum number of permits per day is for eight groups, while only seven groups are allowed to launch each day on the Middle Fork of the river.
On sampling days, each launch party was contacted after they had received a required pre-launch orientation by a USDA Forest Service (USFS) river manager and before they boarded their boats. Up to 10 people, ages 16 and older, from each group were randomly selected for the survey. In groups of 10 or less, all were surveyed. Commercial guides were not included in the pool of potential respondents. This sampling process resulted in 238 commercial clients and 301 private party members.
At the launch point, respondents received a survey composed of five sections. The launch-point section was completed in the presence of a survey administrator. In this pre-trip survey, the floaters were queried about their expectations for the trip, their past river use history, and some basic demographics such as age, education, income, and residence. The four other sections were completed in stages during the trip (first, third, and last nights on the river as well as at the take-out point) and deposited in specially marked repository boxes at easily identified locations. Additional details about the methodology can be found in Hunger (1996, Chapter 3) and Hunger et al. (1999).
The surveys for both the Main Fork (pages labeled 118-129) and the Middle Fork (pages labeled 131-142) are included in this data package: \Supplements\Salmon_River_survey_instruments.pdf.
