Description:
Abstract:
Meteorological and phenological data were collected for European larch on the Coulee Experimental Forest in Wisconsin from 1981-1982 and 1984-1987 (data are missing for 1983). Data were collected generally biweekly from April to November. Variables recorded include: rainfall, terminal shoot growth, needle growth, high and low temperature, and phenological notes about the trees.
Purpose:
These data were collected as part of an effort to study the development, life-cycle, and spread of larch needle-cast (Mycophaerella laricina) in the upper Midwest (Wisconsin and Iowa). As far as known, these data were not part of any specific study or research but were part of a larger framework of learning about this disease.
Supplemental_Information:
There are some data included in the supplemental progress reports that refer to a second site in the Yellow River State Forest located in Iowa. Additionally there are non-environmental data within the progress reports regarding data such as seed sources, disease ratings and tree heights that were not included in the data archived in this publication. This is due to the lack of supporting materials available when archiving these data.

ITIS.GOV contains the genus 'Mycosphaerella' but does not contain the species 'laricina'. ITIS also does not contain possible synonyms 'Exutisphaerella laricina' or 'Sphaerella laricina'. Therefore the original taxonomy was included.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The data are assumed to be accurate.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
A weather station was set up in the field; therefore it is assumed that temperatures were recorded in the field location. Rainfall was specifically noted as being recorded in the field.

Some information such as Location, Tree Species, and Disease were filled out slightly differently or not at all on the data sheets. They were filled in with the same information within the database to consolidate information for the user.

In 1984, only the date of observation was recorded. It was changed to add the time period between observations to maintain consistency except for week 1, since it is unkown when observations first started. In 1987, week 1 also has only the date of observation, but no rainfall was recorded.
Completeness_Report:
Data that are not available are left blank and should not be considered "0".

There was no data for 1983. Tree age was not reported on the datasheets and was therefore left out of this publication.

While most notes on the datasheets were transfered to this publication word for word, some text on the datasheets was nearly illegible or the observers used shorthand within their notes. Every effort was made to translate these into the correct words. Similarly, some data were illegible on the data sheets and were marked with [illegible] within the data.

Changed shorthand abbreviations into full words. Added [illegible] to data where unable to read from datasheets. Added location, species, and disease to all data. Dates of observations were changed to add the time period between observations to maintain consistency except for week 1.

DATA FILES

\Data\EnvironmentalDataLogs.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text file containing rainfall, temperature, larch, and needle measurements collected at the Coulee Experimental Forest in 1981-1982 and 1984-1987. Missing data are represented by a blank, zeros are true zeros, and "[illegible]" denotes there was data for this cell but it was not readable. Variables are defined below.

Year = Year of observation (1981-1982, 1984-1987)

Week No. = Sequential observation number in a particular year (1-31)

Dates = Dates on (mm/dd/yyyy) or date range (mm/dd - mm/dd) between which observations occurred

Rainfall-field = Amount of rain in inches collected and measured at end of each week number; recorded in the field (T = trace)

Terminal shoot growth = Plant growth measured in millimeters (NOTE: 2 values provide a range instead of a single value)

Needle growth = Needle length growth in millimeters (NOTE: 2 values provide a range instead of a single value)

Symptom development, phenological notes or other notes = Notes regarding observations during measurement; notes can refer to singular or multiple trees or general observations

High Temp = Highest recorded temperature in Fahrenheit during week number

Low Temp = Lowest recorded temperature in Fahrenheit during week number

Location = Location of the observations (Coulee Exp. Forest)

Species = Tree species being observed and recorded (E. Larch = European larch)

Disease = Disease being observed and recorded (Mycosphaerella laricina = larch needle-cast)
