Abstract:
- This image archive provides access to a reference collection of photographs from camera traps set at ten different American pika (Ochotona princeps) haypile sites in the eastern Sierra Nevada and spur ranges in Mono County, California during a 2014-2019 occupancy and activity study. Collection includes examples of various pika behaviors documented during study, such as haying, foraging, eating, cheek-rubbing, territorialism and kleptoparasitism; day and night, and during summer, fall and winter. Also includes example photographs of the 25 other mammal species and 10 bird species documented visiting the pika haypiles.
-
Purpose:
- The purpose of this study was to monitor and compare American pika activity at various haypile sites in Mono County.

Methodology_Description:
- Motion-sensitive camera traps were set at American pika haypiles to capture time-stamped digital images of pika activity and any other species that visited the haypile sites. Study sampled twelve different haypile sites in the eastern Sierra Nevada and spur ranges in Mono County, California, including five locations in the Sierra Nevada: Benjamin Buttes (BJB), Lundy Canyon (LUN), State Rocks (STR), Virginia Lakes Canyon (VRC), and Virginia Moraine (VRM); four locations in the Bodie Mountains: East Masonic Mountain (EMM), Red Wash Buttes (RWB), West Masonic Mountain (WMM), and Serita Mine (SER); and three locations in Mono Craters: North Mono Craters 1 (NMC1), North Mono Craters 2 (NMC2) and Pumice Mine (PUM). Sites and sampling periods were selected to facilitate the broad collection of comparable pika activity data at both known active and inactive haypiles, during various seasons, and across multiple years.
