Abstract:
Historical documents, images, maps, line drawings, blueprints, and other materials from USDA Forest Service Research work across the southern United States are included in this database. Subjects include materials on many different aspects of the people, place, programs, and policies related to Forest Service research and development programs in the area now covered by the Forest Service’s Southern Research Station. This collection of materials is part of the Station’s effort to document its first century of operations, from the openings of the Appalachian and Southern Forest Experiment Stations on July 1, 1921, to the present date.
Purpose:
Preserve historical materials of the work of Forest Service Research and Development in the southern United States, 1921-2020.

Photographs are from various internal and external collections of photographs, negatives, maps, line drawings, blueprints, paper documents, and other records. Digitization processes varied; most were scanned into appropriate formats using flatbed scanners or were originally taken as digital images via digital camera or generated using computer software (e.g., some maps). Digital image resolutions varied; most are more than 300 dots per inch (dpi). A few video clips are also included.

DESCRIPTION = description of the contents of the image

KEYWORDS = keywords associated with the image contents

ORGANISMS = species depicted in the image

PHOTOGRAPHER = name of the person who took the photo, if known

ORIGINAL COLLECTION ID = internal ID number associated with the image

MEDIA = original form of the image

COLLECTION = category to which the image belongs

LOCATION = general location where the photo was taken

DATE = date when the photo was taken if known, exact or approximate

COMMENTS = additional comments

\Data\*.jpg: JPEG files (487) containing historical documents, images, maps, line drawings, blueprints, and other materials from USDA Forest Service Research work across the southern United States from as early as 1921. Information about each photograph can be found in _photo_information.csv.

\Data\*.mp4: MPEG-4 video files (2) containing a narrated movie of the history of the Crossett Experimental Forest in southeastern Arkansas and a movie on the need for and science behind direct seeding was produced in the early 1960s to highlight the role of research in addressing management questions.
