Description:
Abstract:
A medium longleaf site on the Palustris Experimental Forest, in Louisiana, was direct-seeded in 1961 and then thinned in 1969 using several different levels of thinning. This publication includes tree counts recorded in 1968 and 1969, before and after treatments. Also included are additional tree measurement data, collected in 1974 and then every five years until 2019, such as diameter at breast height for each tree as well as the tree or stand age. For a subset of trees, additional measurements such as height, height to base of live crown, crown class, bark thickness in two directions, and height of trees to 4 different outside bark diameters (2, 4, 6, and 8 inches) are also provided.
Purpose:
The original study was meant to be used in in conjunction with other studies on other sites for determining the best thinning method for dense direct-seeded longleaf pine stands.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
These data were checked for basic accuracy and consistency using programs to check for things like diameter at breast height or height going down and number of trees going up. When issues were found, data were checked against original datasheets and adjustments made when possible. There is a variable in the data (error) that indicates potential problems that could not be fixed.

In checking the data, it was also observed that sometimes there are more trees at a subsequent date than the current date. This can be attributed to missed trees at the earlier date and sometimes trees that were thought to be dead surviving.

It is also important to note that there was no specific indicator of species in any of the data and related files, so all are assumed to be longleaf pine.

BACKGROUND

The area for this study is on the Longleaf Tract on the Palustris Experimental Forest in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Site quality is estimated to be average for longleaf pine. The area was direct-seeded in December 1961. Initial establishment was considered good, but the following summer seedling mortality was heavy, so the area was reseeded in December 1962. Some seedlings in later years became infected with brown spot needle disease and multiple attempts were made to try to treat this using different spraying techniques.

STUDY DESIGN

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of precommercial thinning in a dense young longleaf pine stand that was established by direct seeding on a medium site.

There were six treatments replicated four times in a randomized block design where treatments included: 1) thinning to 3000 trees per acre (TPA), 2) thinning to 1500 TPA, 3) thinning to 1000 TPA, 4) thinning to 750 TPA, 5) thinning to 500 TPA, and 6) cutting all trees on strips 9.9 feet wide leaving 3.3 foot-wide unthinned swaths with about 1500 trees per gross acre.

Prior to application of thinning (1968), the planned plots were inventoried for the number of trees using 25 milacre plots per study plot. Thinning treatments were applied in January and February of 1969. Initial measurements were taken in March 1969, but they are just counts of trees by height class. Plots were then remeasured at 5-year intervals. The data included in this data publication include approximate age of stand and diameter at breast height for every tree in each plot. Also included for a subset of trees each year is: height to base of live crown, tree height, crown class, bark thickness in two directions, and height of trees to 4 different outside bark diameters (2, 4, 6, and 8 inches). Height sample trees were selected by measuring every nth tree in a given diameter class. Coordinates for trees were first recorded in 2019 so only trees surviving until that time have coordinates.

Diameter at breast height (dbh) was measured with a diameter tape. Height was first measured with a teletop dendrometer, but later measurements were done with a Criterion laser device.

Process_Description:
There are plot location maps in the establishment report, but they are only approximate and take some effort to convert to on-the-ground locations. GPS coordinates were taken of these plots but true plot center is no longer marked so these coordinates will get you to the plot, but may not represent the exact plot center location. These coordinates were transferred to ArcMap and some adjustments were made to place plots closer to the grid they were supposed to be in. All of the measurement plots are 0.1 acres in size with a 33-foot buffer around each central plot so that the gross plots take up 0.4 acres.

Attribute_Definition:
During error checking of the data many odd things like decreasing diameters were found. Rather than fictionalize the data, if we could not determine what the true value should be, we simply flagged that measurement with one of the codes below. Trees flagged with these codes may or may not be measured incorrectly. They could have lost diameter or height due to breakage of bark sloughing, but they could be problems and are thus flagged.

1 = height accumulation (taper, height to a given diameter) problem
2 = height to base of live crown problem
3 = height accumulation and height to base of live crown problem
4 = total height problem
5 = height accumulation and/or total height problem
6 = total height and height to base of live crown problem
7 = height accumulation, height to base of live crown, and/or total height problem
8 = dbh problem
9 = dbh problem and height accumulation problem
10 = dbh problem and height to base of live crown problem
11 = dbh problem and hblc problem and height accumulation problem
12 = dbh problem and total height problem
13 = dbh problem and total height problem and height accumulation problem
14 = dbh problem and total height problem and hblc problem
15 = dbh problem and total height problem and hblc problem and height accumulation problem
16 = ingrowth tree (appeared from nowhere). An ingrowth tree is only tagged when it first appears.

This coding is based on a binary number where moving from least significant to most significant we have one bit for each of height accumulation problems, height to base of live crown problems, total height problems, and dbh problems. Moving back into base 10 numbers, we have:

1 = height accumulation problem
2 = height to base of live crown problem
4 = total height problems
8 = dbh problems

Multiple problems are just the sum of the 4 possible codes above. SAS has some functions that make it fairly easy to extract these error conditions from this single number. The following is an example of one way to do this:
errord=0;errort=0;errorh=0;errorv=0;
if error= '.1...'b then errord=1;
if error= '..1..'b then errort=1;
if error= '...1.'b then errorh=1;
if error= '....1'b then errorv=1;

The number of trees in each 0.5-foot height class (in feet) post-treatment, in 1969. Height classes (##) are denoted without the decimal point, therefore ## = 05, 10, 15, 20, … 135 represent height classes: 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, …, 13.5. (I.e., ht_05 = number of trees with a height ≤ 0.5 feet; ht_10 = number of trees in height class 1.0, where height > 0.75 feet and ≤ 1.25 feet, etc.)

Below you will find a list and description of the files included in this data publication.

DATA FILES (4)
Descriptions for the variables included in these data files can be found in the Entity and Attribute Detailed section above. Descriptions for the comma-delimited ASCII text files can also be found in \Supplements\Data_and_Study_Descriptions.pdf.

1. \Data\PostTreat_1969.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text (CSV) file containing data collected after the stand was treated, but before detailed measurements began. It has a row for each plot followed by a count of trees on each plot in each height class. The height classes missing the decimal point since that does not work well in variable naming. Thus ht_05 is a count of trees in the 0.5-foot height class and ht_135 is the count of trees in the 13.5-foot height class.

2. \Data\PreTreat_1968.csv: CSV file containing data collected before the study treatments were applied. There is one row for each plot with columns for each of the 25 milacre plots which were used to sample the stand. Each milacre has a count of all trees found (all_?) and a count of trees found that had started height growth (htgro_?).

3. \Data\study320.csv: CSV file containing tree measurements recorded on direct-seeded longleaf pine plots on the Palustris Experimental Forest in Rapides Parish, Louisiana where six different thinning treatments were applied in 1969 (Study 3.20). Data such as diameter at breast height, tree height, height to base of life crown and crown class were recorded in 1974 and every 5 years until the present.

4. \Data\PlotLocations\study_320.shp: Shapefile (and associated files) containing approximate location of each plot in Study 3.20. This file provides the plot "Name", which is the plot number.

SUPPLEMENTAL FILES (4)

1. \Supplements\Data_and_Study_Description.pdf: Portable Document Format (PDF) file containing a short summary of Study 3.20 and a complete list and description of the variables included in the data file study320.csv.

2. \Supplements\Establishment_Report_320.pdf: PDF file containing the actual establishment report "Precommercial thinning direct-seeded longleaf pine on a medium site," which includes maps and description of the experiment.

3. \Supplements\Progress_Report_320.pdf: PDF file containing a progress report as of 1975 for this study, "Precommercial thinning direct-seeded longleaf pine on a medium site." It includes much of the establishment report and also some preliminary results.

4. \Supplements\Study_320_Plot_Map.pdf: PDF file containing a printed map of the plot layout. It is mainly a drawing of what is in the shapefile with some background graphics.
