Description:
Abstract:
This data publication includes a sample of the live aboveground biomass (standing crop) and foliar cover of Ventenata dubia (ventenata) and other plant functional groups of the Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass Prairie (PNB). These data were collected in June and July 2018 as part of a study in the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve in northeastern Oregon. Standing crop and cover was measured within 8 paddocks that were either grazed (1.3 - 1.6 hectares/animal unit months) or excluded from cattle grazing. This project was completed as a component of a study examining the invasion of ventenata in the Blue Mountains Ecoregion (EPA Level III; https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/level-iii-and-iv-ecoregions-continental-united-states).
Purpose:
These data were collected in an effort to examine the effect of cattle grazing on the abundance of ventenata and other plant groups of the PNB. Ventenata's invasion is relatively recent in this region and the existance of an established network of monitoring plots allowed a view of the ventenata invasion in a unique and uncommon plant community of the Pacific Northwest.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
The Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is a 13,300 hectare (ha) remnant patch of Pacific Northwest Bunchgrass Prairie located in northeastern Oregon and managed by the Nature Conservancy. Climate of the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve is characterized by cold winters and hot summers. Recent (2006-2015) winter temperatures average -2.7 °Celsius (°C) and summer temperatures average 15 °C. Recent (2006-2015) annual precipitation averaged 34.9 centimeters (cm), with the majority occurring during the winter season. The bunchgrass prairie plant community is dominated by bunchgrass species including bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata), Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis), Sandburg bluegrass (Poa secunda), and prairie junegrass (Koeleria macrantha).

BACKGROUND

This study was conducted in northeastern Oregon on the Zumwalt Prairie Preserve. In 2004, plots were established as part of a multidisciplinary study to examine the effects of cattle stocking rates on grassland food webs. The study was a randomized complete block design with four blocks and four stocking rate treatment levels. Our study involved resampling the plots for two of these treatment levels (grazed 1.3 - 1.6 hectare per animal unit months and excluded - fenced to exclude cattle but open to elk).

MEASUREMENTS

Rectangular quadrats (0.5 meter [m] x 1.0 m) were measured in 2018 at each of the 18 monitoring plots located within each paddock (8 total: 4 control, 4 grazed). Foliar cover was recorded to the nearest 1% for ventenata and all other plant functional groups before all live aboveground biomass (standing crop) was removed and separated into ventenata and non-ventenata categories and then bagged. Biomass bags were then dried at 60 °C for at least 24 hours before being weighed to the nearest 100th of a gram.
