Description:
Abstract:
In the summer of 1963, a number of measurement plots in natural stands of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) were established across the southern United States with additional plots added regularly, resulting in 364 plots in this regional longleaf growth study (RLGS). Since plots were measured on successive occasions, the end result is 265848 records on individual trees from 1964 through 2011. These data include the variables necessary to examine the growth and yield of this species such as diameter at breast height, crown class, crown height, tree height, status of tree, age, and other additional measurements. Also included are weather data collected near these plots, soil horizon measurements, soil nutrient data, information on pole classification, as well as fallen needle data collected between 1992 and 1997. A shapefile containing these RLGS plot locations is also provided.
Purpose:
These data were intended to be used in growth and yield modeling, but the large number of repeated measurements could allow for climate change or other ecological studies.
Supplemental_Information:
There are multiple publications that have resulted from this RLGS study. These publications are provided in \Supplements\Products_from_the_RLGS.pdf.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
These data were collected over a number of years by a variety of researchers, so the accuracy might vary. An examination of the data will reveal some inconsistencies in age versus year of measurement, but the actual collectors of the data feel that it is better to leave these inconsistencies than try to correct them when there is no certainty of the correct value.

In the year 1979, a different group of researchers took temporary custody of the study before it was returned to the founding researchers. The founding researchers have some distrust of the data collected at that time.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
As mentioned in the attribute accuracy section, the ages do not always agree with the year of measurement, but it was felt better to not change them to achieve agreement and possibly sacrifice accuracy.
Completeness_Report:
Not every attribute was collected at every measurement. There is the issue of sample trees so that not every tree had all variables measured. Similarly, not every variable was measured on every plot which in some cases is a result of a few plots being removed from the study.

Azimuth and distance to the trees were collected at only one time.

It appears that they were going to collect needle data in 1994 (blank rows were added), but no data were actually recorded.

RLGS STUDY DESIGN

Data used for this analysis were collected on permanent measurement plots initiated in 1964 by the U.S. Forest Service on both public and private land. The study was established to investigate production of thinned, even-aged, naturally regenerated stands in the East Gulf region of the southern United States. Plots were selected to fill an array of cells with five 20-year age classes, five 10-foot site index classes, and five 30-square feet basal area classes (Farrar 1979, 1993). Permanent circular plots were mostly 0.20 acre (with some 0.10 acre) surrounded by similarly treated 33-foot wide buffer zones. Plots were measured at five-year intervals except for a subset of plots included in a special series that were measured more frequently. This is a cooperative study with multiple owners who furnish the study areas and control/protect the stands. Prior to remeasurement, all cooperators with plots to be inventoried are contacted and informed about the remeasurement. (See \Supplements\ProgressReport1981.pdf for additional details.)

TREATMENTS

There are periodic thinnings to maintain plot basal areas at 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 square feet/acre and some unthinned plots.

The actual basal area to which plots were thinned is included in \Data\RLGS_final_summary.csv.

RLGS MEASUREMENTS

On each net plot, each tree is uniquely and positively identified (paint numbered) consecutively from magnetic north by progressive azimuth and has the following information recorded for it: tree number, diameter at breast height (dbh), crown class, pole class and length, azimuth and distance from plot center, whether living or dead (if dead, cause of death), whether cut or left, and whether a sample tree or not. Approximately one-fifth of the trees are systematically selected as permanent samples (until cut or dead) on which the following measurements are made: total height, height to base of live crown, and age if dominant or codominant. The isolation-strip trees are not monitored but are thinned to the same density as the net plot.

Dbh was measured on all trees and a subsample of trees were measured for height. At time of plot installation, every fifth tree in each 1-inch dbh class was selected for height measurement and cored to determine age if the tree was dominant or co-dominant. When possible, there were at least two height sample trees per dbh class and a minimum of 10 sample trees per plot, unless there were less than 10 trees in which case all trees were measured.

Site index was computed with the site index equation by Lauer and Kush (2010) using the measurement closest to the base age for plots that had not yet reached base age, closest to base age for plots older than base age when established, or averaging the two site index estimates closest to base age for plots that had measurements both before and after the base age. Plot volumes were computed using volume equations by Farrar (1981) using average height for a tree’s dbh class.

SOIL DATA

A bucket auger to go down to the limiting layer and/or 6 feet, which ever came first. This was done at 4 locations on the plot in the cardinal directions and about 26 feet away from plot center. We laid out the soils on a plastic sheet and measured the depth/length of each horizon. Soils were composited by horizon and sent off to a lab for analysis of texture. Bulk density samples were for the upper 3 inches of the soil and those were individual samples.

DATA FILES (9)

Below you will find a list and description of the data files included in this data publication. (Variable descriptions are also included in the Entity and Attributes detail section of this metadata file.) The main data file is RLGS_final_data_set.csv, but there are also several accessory data files including soil horizons, soil nutrients needle fall, and pole data.

1. \Data\Needle_fall_for_1992-1997.csv: Comma-delimited ASCII text (CSV) file containing fallen needle data collected between 1992 and 1997 on the RLGS plots. Variables are described below.

Plot: plot number

Direction: cardinal direction where the needle fall trap was located; there were either 3 or 4 traps on the plots sampled
n = north
e = east
s = south
w = west

Dry wt & bag: weight in grams of the dried needles and bag weight (“.” = data were lost)

Bag wt: dry weight of the bag in grams (“.” = data were lost)

First date: calendar date in month day and year (MMDDYY) when the collection started; example 70892 means the needle fall collection started on July 8, 1992

Collection date: calendar date in month day and year when the needle fall was collected

Note: the needle fall traps measured 3 feet by 3 feet and were set up on stakes 2 to 3 feet above the ground. Efforts were made to collect the needle fall every 4-5 weeks. If the data under the Dry wt & bag column is “.” then the data were lost for some reason.

2. \Data\Pole_data.csv: CSV file containing pole classification of trees on the RLGS plots. Variables are described below.

Plot: plot number

Tree: tree number

Pole: if value = 0 the tree did not make a pole; if value = 1 the tree could make a pole based on diameter at breast height (dbh) and form

Defect Ht: height in feet on the tree at which it could no longer be included if merchandised as a pole

DBH: diameter at breast height (diameter of tree at 4.5 feet) in inches

Crown Ht: crown height in feet

Total Ht: total tree height in feet

Age: ring count at dbh plus 7 years

Pole Class: pole classification (1-10) given based on dbh and length of pole (no description of these levels was provided, but we assume these are ANSI pole classes)

Pole Length: pole length in feet - the tallest pole that the tree could be, based on dbh and length; sometimes there is a length here, but the notes column will say NO POLE in which case there is no actual pole because it did not meet ANSI standards

Notes: Textual notes – if the column says “NO POLE:NO CLASS FITS” this means based on dbh and/or length, the tree could not make a pole based on ANSI standards

3. \Data\RLGS_final_data_set.csv: CSV file containing the main regional longleaf growth study (RLGS) data collected in this study spanning about 50 years. Variables are described below.

1 = dominant tree
2 = co-dominant tree
3 = intermediate
4 = suppressed
5 = indicates the tree was at least 10 years older than the average dominant and co-dominant tree on the plot and this tree was not to be used for the calculation of plot site index

Fate: fate of the tree
0 = tree was alive
5 = tree was dead

Cut: if cut = 9 then the tree was to be cut; if fate = 5 then cut = 5
