Description:
Abstract:
Forest stands at Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest (BMEF) in northeastern California have undergone changes since the establishment of the Experimental Forest in 1934. Twelve stands were selected exhibiting a range of past management activities to establish metrics describing tree density and stocking conditions in small trees (regeneration) at Blacks Mountain. Methods chosen for plot size and configuration were designed to be similar to those used in an earlier effort (in 1933 and 1934) that quantified trees less than 3.6 inches breast height diameter. We recorded seedling and sapling counts by species group and size class at BMEF in the summer and fall of 2018. In addition to the 2018 data, this data publication also includes the compartment summary data from 1933 and 1934. Data are provided as comma-separated values (CSV) files, but scanned field sheets from 2018 are provided as well as a scan of the work by R.H. Mors in 1936 as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Also included are PDF files of all references noted in the methods section.
Purpose:
The observations on tree regeneration were undertaken to allow a spatial analysis of current tree density at the Experimental Forest (Nepal et al. 2020) as well as provide a means to compare with summaries recorded from the earlier (1933-1934) sampling effort.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
We conducted quality checks of the BMEF 2018 regeneration data. Some checks for completeness and other process errors were done by Sushil Nepal at the University of British Columbia. However, the Forest Service also wanted to closely inspect the data, so additional testing was done, see the Logical Consistency section of \Supplements\Methods_for_2018_BMEF_Regeneration_Cruise.pdf for complete details.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data are logically consistent. The consistency was verified as part of the quality assurance that occurred during data analysis. See the Logical Consistency section of \Supplements\Methods_for_2018_BMEF_Regeneration_Cruise.pdf for complete details.
Completeness_Report:
The early plot data from 1933-1934 were discarded at some point after the summaries were completed in 1936, so the summary data are all that is available for these early data.

There are no missing data or omissions for the 2018 data.

Methodology_Description:
An original tree census and regeneration inventory were conducted in 1933 and 1934 on 100 compartments of approximately 100 acres each. Trees ≥3.6 inches diameter at breast height (dbh) were censused across the entire property. For the regeneration portion of this effort, the regeneration (trees <3.6 inches) were sampled on 1-milacre plots in clusters. The clusters were in groups of 4 (in a square) along the transect and in pairs at either end. The regeneration were sampled in 4 different size classes. These are: 1) trees less than 1 foot tall, 2) trees between 1 and 3 feet tall, 3) trees between 3 feet and 6 feet tall, and 4) trees >6 feet tall and <3.6 inches breast height diameter.

These data were collected on 100 compartments averaging 100 acres in size. Subsequently in 1938, a Methods of Cutting study was initiated, with various treatments being applied from 1938 to 1948 (Hasel 1938, Hallin 1959).

For 2018 data we sampled 12 of the original compartments including 4 that are now designated as research natural areas (RNA). The regeneration was surveyed from July through October 2018, using methods similar to the 1933 inventory. (Data were collected such that either tree density or stocking can be evaluated directly Ritchie 2020). Seedlings were counted in 4-milacre circular plots (divided into 4 1-milacre quarters) by species or species group, and classified in five size classes. Size classes used in 2018 sampling were modified because of the abundance of current year seedlings observed in the spring of 2018. A zero class was added for trees <4 inches in height, and then class = 1 was modifed to represent trees that were 4 inches to 1 foot in height.

A complete description of the methods can be found in \Supplements\Methods_for_2018_BMEF_Regeneration_Cruise.pdf, in addition to a list of additional important references which are also included as supplemental files in this data publication.

Process_Description:
Data for 2018 were recorded on field sheets. In the office, the field sheets were scanned as Portable Document Format (PDF) files for a digital record. Data were then digitally entered into comma-separated values (CSV) files. Subsequently, S. Nepal conducted logic checks and made modifications to the CSV files as necessary to correct errors.

VARIABLE DESCRIPTION FILE (1)
File is provided as a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

1. \Data\_variable_descriptions.csv: List and description of variables found in all data files. (A description of these variables is also provided in the metadata below.)

Columns include:

Filename = Name of data file
Variable = Name of variable
Units = Units (if applicable)
Precision = Precision (if applicable)
Description = Description of variable

DATA FILES (2)
Data files are provided as comma-separated values (CSV) files.

1. \Data\bmef1933regencompsummary.csv: Data summaries from the original 1933-1934 regeneration inventory.

Variables include:

compartment = This is a text string (which can be coerced to a factor) describing the original BMEF compartment designation.

year = Year of observation.

month = Month of observation.

area = Area of the compartment recorded in 1933-1934. Derived from a planimeter, is representative of the forested area typed out within the compartment. (acres, precision = 0.1)

n_plots = Number of 1-milacre plots (quadrats).

species = Species designation for the count: PP = Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) and Pinus jeffreyi (Jeffrey pine), WF = Abies concolor (white fir), and IC = Calocedrus decurrens (incense-cedar). (Note: Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine were lumped together into a single species group (PP)). It appears that the researchers were not interested in any of the other minor species at BMEF, as they are not referenced in the count data.

htcl = Numeric height class designation for the count: 1 = < 1 foot, 2 = 1-3 feet, 3 = 3-6 feet, and 4 = 6 feet height to 3.5 inches diameter at breast height (dbh).

count = Count of trees on 1-milacre plot for the specified htcl and species.

tpa_hand = Trees per acre calculated by hand circa 1936 by Mors, rounded to 0.1.

tpa_calc = Trees per acre calculated with Microsoft Excel, rounded to 0.1.

error = Error (difference) between the two trees per acre values (units are trees per acre).

2. \Data\bmef2018regen.csv: Plot data from the 2018 regeneration inventory.

Variables include:

obs = Unique observation number.

compartment = This is a text string (which can be coerced to a factor) describing either the letter of the Research Natural Area, or the original BMEF compartment designation. See BMEF compartment map in \Supplements\Compartment_Map_BMEF_Mod.jpg.

year = Year of observation.

month = Month of the observation (numeric 1-12).

day = Day of the observation (numeric 1-31).

grid_X = BMEF easting index, from 0 to 100 meters. Function for nominal NAD 83 UTM (zone 10) Easting is: UTM_E = grid_X x 100 + 652000 (meters, precision = 0.5).

grid_Y = BMEF northing index, from 0 to 100 meters. Function for nominal NAD 83 UTM (zone 10) Northing is: UTM_N = grid_Y x 100 + 450600 (meters, precision = 0.5).

area = Area of the compartment recorded in 1935. (acres, precision = 0.1)

qds = Pie-wedge shaped 1-milacre plot number; 1 = NE, 2 = SE, 3 = SW, 4 = NW, four per grid point location. In the 1935 data these were square 1-milacre quadrats, either in a group of four or group of two with a common corner. Researchers employed circular 4-milacre plots with 1 milacre quarters in 2018.

species = Species designation for the count: PP = Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) and Pinus jeffreyi (Jeffrey pine), WF = Abies concolor (white fir), and IC = Calocedrus decurrens (incense-cedar). No data were entered for other species, even though a few Juniperus occidentalis (western juniper) were encountered - these are entered in comments. (Note: the two pine species were collapsed into one species group to be consistent with the 1935 data collection effort.)

htcl = Numeric height class designation for the count: 0 = less than 4 inches, 1 = 4 inches to 1 foot, 2 = 1-3 feet, 3 = 3-6 feet, and 4 = 6 feet in height to 3.5 inches diameter at breast height (dbh). The 0-class was added because of the abundance of current year seedlings observed in the spring of 2018 before sampling began. Thus, many of the seedlings less than 4 inches in height are going to be ephemeral. By creating the 0-class, these may be removed easily from consideration. Note: in the data from 1933 and 1934, there is no zero class, rather class 1 appears to include all seedlings <1 foot tall.

count = Count of trees on 1-milacre plot for the specified htcl and species.

groups = Similar to count by a cache of seedlings is counted as 1. It is not uncommon to encounter seedlings that have been cached by rodents. These will present as a group of seedlings germinating from the same spot. A value of zero groups indicates there were no cached seedlings observed in the plot.

comments = Text string containing comments.
