Description:

Abstract:
- This data publication contains raster spatial data (GeoTIFF) of the dominant sagebrush association in the Great Basin region of the western United States, which includes portions of Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. These data were created by 1) overlaying LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type, Biophysical Setting, and Mapping Zone data layers; 2) extracting vegetation plot data from the LANDFIRE 2016 LF Reference Database for each combination; and 3) identifying the associated sagebrush, grass, shrub, and tree species. These data represent conditions from 2016-2022.
-
Purpose:
- In sagebrush ecosystems the responses to fuel treatments are highly dependent on the predominant vegetation types as well as their resilience to wildfire and fuel treatments (resilience) and resistance to invasive annual grasses (resistance). New ecologically relevant and climate sensitive indicators of resilience and resistance based on climate and water availability have been developed recently. However, information is also needed on the locations and extents of the dominant sagebrush associations, persistent woodlands (PJ; pinyon and/or juniper), and the different phases (successional stages) of PJ expansion into the shrublands. This data layer provides the locations and extents of the dominant sagebrush associations.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
- No formal tests or field validation were performed to assess attribute accuracy and look for data errors. Instead, the final map products were evaluated by subject matter experts for plausibility by comparison to satellite imagery and summaries of extents of coverage at ecoregional scales.
NOTE: This version has not been masked to remove possible areas defined as not sagebrush.
-
Logical_Consistency_Report:
- The data are logically consistent. The consistency was verified as part of the quality assurance that occurred during data analysis.
-
Completeness_Report:
- Dominant sagebrush associations values are supplied only for the portions of the three focal ecoregions (Northern Basin and Range, Central Basin and Range, and Snake River Plain) that lie within the perimeter of the sagebrush biome. Furthermore, only areas that lie within a LANDFIRE biophysical setting that is associated with sagebrush vegetation are assigned dominant sagebrush values. We further constrained the data layer for the dominant sagebrush associations by assigning land cover as NA (not applicable) if it was designated as barren, agriculture, or developed according to the Existing Vegetation Type data layer from LANDFIRE.

Process_Step:
-
-
Process_Description:
- To develop the dominant sagebrush associations for the three focal ecoregions, we first overlaid the Existing Vegetation Type (EVT), Biophysical Setting (BPS), and LANDFIRE Mapping Zone (LANDFIRE 2020 BPS and LANDFIRE 2020 EVT). This created an accounting of all unique combinations of these three layers. Next, the values of the EVT, BPS and map zone found at each vegetation plot from the LANDFIRE 2016 LF Reference Database (LANDFIRE 2016 LFRDB) were extracted. Third, using the resulting database, all vegetation plot records with Artemisia spp. were selected, and the number of instances of sagebrush species per unique combination of EVT, BPS, and Mapping Zone were tallied and ranked. We also tallied the top 5 shrub and top 3 tree and grass species present. Fourth, we used expert knowledge to assign the dominant sagebrush associations based on information on the dominant sagebrush species present as well as the associated grasses, shrubs, and trees. In cases where the counts of different sagebrush species were similar, the estimated sagebrush association reflected the combination of species. Not all combinations of EVT, BPS, and LANDFIRE Zones within the study area contained LFRDB plots that were useful in assigning sagebrush associations. For those cases, we assigned sagebrush associations based on the BPS description for that combination. We characterized seven sagebrush associations:
1) low sage (ARAR8 = Artemisia arbuscula and ARRI2 = Artemisia rigida),
2) black sagebrush (ARNO4 = Artemisia nova),
3) mixed low sagebrush (ARAR8 and ARNO4 with minor amounts of ARTRV = Artemisia tridentata ssp. Vaseyana and ARTRW8 = Artemisia tridentata ssp. Wyomingensis),
4) basin big sagebrush (ARTRT = Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata),
5) mountain big sagebrush (ARTRV), and
6) Wyoming/Basin big sagebrush (ARTRT and ARTRW8),
7) Wyoming big sagebrush (ARTRW8).
The tabular dominant sagebrush associations were joined to the spatial data layer describing EVT, BPS and map zone. This enabled the sagebrush associations to be shown in a spatially explicit manner. Those areas that were not associated with a sagebrush BPS or otherwise assigned to a sagebrush association were designated as the category “not sage.” We further constrained the data layer for the dominant sagebrush associations by assigning land cover as NA (not applicable) if it was designated as barren, agriculture, or developed according to the Existing Vegetation Type data layer from LANDFIRE (LANDFIRE 2020 EVT).

- Below you will find a list and description of the files included in this data publication.
VARIABLE DESCRIPTION FILE (1)
1. \Data\_variable_descriptions.csv: Comma-separated values (CSV) file containing a list and description of variables found in all data files. (A description of these variables is also provided in the metadata below.)
Columns include:
Filename = name of data file
Variable = name of variable
Description = description of variable
DATA FILES (1)
1. \Data\DomSageAssociationsWithPJExpansion_2023-05-31.tif: Georeferenced (GeoTIFF) raster file (and associated files) containing vegetation assemblages characterized by one or more dominant sagebrush species.
Attributes include:
Value = Unique numeric values contained in each raster cell. Category values correspond to:
0 = Not Sage (landscape that has a Biophysical Setting not associated with sagebrush)
1 = Low Sage (ARAR8 = Artemisia arbuscula and ARRI2 = Artemisia rigida)
2 = Black Sage (ARNO4 = Artemisia nova)
3 = Mixed Low Sage (ARAR8 and ARNO4 with minor amounts of ARTRV = Artemisia tridentata ssp. Vaseyana and ARTRW8 = Artemisia tridentata ssp. Wyomingensis)
4 = Basin Big Sage (ARTRT = Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata)
5 = Mountain Big Sage (ARTRV = Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana)
6 = Wyoming Sage (ARTRW8 = Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis)
7 = Wyoming/Basin Big Sage (ARTRT = Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata and ARTRW8 = Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis)
SUPPLEMENTAL FILES (1)
1. \Supplements\SagebrushAssociation_Map_BarplotWPJ_2023-07-05.tif: Tagged Image File Format (TIF) file containing a formatted map of cover of dominant sagebrush associations in the Northern Basin and Range (NBR), Snake River Plain (SRP), and Central Basin and Range (CBR). Bar graph at upper right shows the proportion of the area of each dominant sagebrush association within each ecoregion.
