Description:
Abstract:
This data publication contains raster spatial data (GeoTIFF) representing areas of pinyon-juniper (PJ) expansion into sagebrush ecosystems and persistent woodland and expansion within the Great Basin region of the western United States, which includes portions of Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, and Utah. To determine areas for potential fuel treatments, we overlayed PJ cover onto the dominant sagebrush associations. We used the Rangeland Analysis Platform to identify three phases (I, II, and III) or successional stages of PJ expansion based on the amount of tree cover expected for the different sagebrush associations. Because fuel treatments are conducted primarily in the early phases (Phase I and II successional stages) of tree expansion, it is important to designate these phases on the landscape. To characterize the persistent woodlands, we identified the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings (BPS) categories that represented persistent pinyon and juniper (PJ; Pinus monophylla, Juniperus occidentalis and/or J. osteosperma) woodlands within the dominant sagebrush associations. These areas are considered high value resources and are excluded from fuel treatments. The data for PJ expansion areas and persistent woodlands represent conditions from 2016-2022.
Purpose:
In sagebrush ecosystems the responses to woody fuel treatments are highly dependent on the dominant sagebrush association, the presence of pinyon-juniper expansion, and as their resilience to wildfire and fuel treatments (resilience) and resistance to invasive annual grasses (resistance). New ecologically relevant and climate sensitive indicators of resilience and resistance based on climate and water availability have been developed recently. However, information is also needed on the locations and extents of the dominant sagebrush associations, the different phases (successional stages) of pinyon-juniper (PJ) expansion into the shrublands, if any, and the extent of persistent pinyon-juniper (PJ) woodlands. This data layer provides the locations and extents of PJ expansion areas and persistent PJ woodlands within the dominant sagebrush associations.

Data were originally published on 1/18/2024. On 07/21/2026, minor metadata updates were made, including the addition of information regarding the data also being available in a second repository.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
No formal tests or field validation were performed to assess attribute accuracy and look for data errors. Instead, the final map products were evaluated by subject matter experts for plausibility by comparison to satellite imagery and summaries of extents of coverage at ecoregional scales.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The data are logically consistent. The consistency was verified as part of the quality assurance that occurred during data analysis.
Completeness_Report:
Pinyon and juniper (PJ) expansion phase and persistent woodland values are supplied only for the portions of the three focal ecoregions (Northern Basin and Range, Central Basin and Range, and Snake River Plain) that lie within the perimeter of the sagebrush biome. The dominant sagebrush layer had been masked to exclude barren land cover, agriculture, development, roads, and forests other than pinyon-juniper woodlands, and these exclusions were carried through to the PJ layer.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
We began with the recently developed dominant sagebrush association layer (Chambers et al. 2024), and considered only the portion of the landscape thought to be occupied by sagebrush species. We then used the Rangeland Analysis Platform (Allred et al. 2021) to evaluate tree cover within the dominant sagebrush associations. We mapped sagebrush associations with relatively low site productivity, including low, black or mixed low sagebrush, as pinyon and juniper (PJ) Phase I where tree cover was 1-10% tree cover, Phase II where tree cover was 10-20%, or Phase III where tree cover was >20%. We mapped sagebrush associations with higher site productivity, including basin big, basin/Wyoming big, mountain big, or Wyoming big sagebrush as PJ Phase I where tree cover was 1-10% tree cover, Phase II where tree cover was 10-30%, or Phase III where tree cover was >30%.

We refined the map layer further by removing those areas in LANDFIRE Expected Vegetation Types (LANDFIRE 2020 EVT) dominated by tree species other than pinyon or juniper, including quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) and mountain mahogany (Cercocarpus ledifolius). Areas removed include (listed by EVT name):
Tr Rocky Mountain Aspen Forest and Woodland
Tr Rocky Mountain Bigtooth Maple Ravine Woodland
Tr Inter-Mountain Basins Subalpine Limber-Bristlecone Pine Woodland
Tr California Montane Jeffrey Pine(-Ponderosa Pine) Woodland
Tr Northern Rocky Mountain Dry-Mesic Montane Mixed Conifer Forest

Tr Rocky Mountain Subalpine Mesic-Wet Spruce-Fir Forest and Woodland
Tr Rocky Mountain Subalpine-Montane Limber-Bristlecone Pine Woodland
Tr Sierra Nevada Subalpine Lodgepole Pine Forest and Woodland
Tr Inter-Mountain Basins Aspen-Mixed Conifer Forest and Woodland
Tr Inter-Mountain Basins Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany Woodland and Shrubland
Tr Middle Rocky Mountain Montane Douglas-fir Forest and Woodland

Finally, we added the areas likely to represent PJ persistent woodlands by identifying areas in which the LANDFIRE LF Zones (geographic subdivisions analogous to Commission for Environmental Cooperation [CEC] ecoregions), Biophysical System Names, and Group Names in the biophysical settings layer (BPS) represented persistent pinyon and juniper woodlands in the study area (LANDFIRE 2020 BPS). Areas added include (listed by LF Zone: Biophysical System Name, and Group Name):
