Description:
Abstract:
This data publication provides a taxa list of aquatic invertebrates found in outlet streams and laggs of catchments S2 and S6 (acidic bogs), as well as S3 (an alkaline fen) in April 2009 at Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. This work is the first inventory of aquatic invertebrates completed at MEF. Invertebrates were identified using a stereoscope to order, family, and genus taxonomic levels when possible. Functional Feeding Group (FFG) classifications were located for each invertebrate taxon from published scientific literature and included in this MEF aquatic invertebrate data publication. Representative invertebrate specimens were preserved in 7% formalin for the physical MEF aquatic invertebrate reference collection to be maintained and stored at the Northern Research Station Forestry Sciences Laboratory in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Purpose:
Aquatic invertebrate data were collected to determine differences and similarities of aquatic invertebrate community diversity within bog and fen catchments at Marcell Experimental Forest.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
The USDA Forest Service Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) is an 1141-hectare tract of land within the Chippewa National Forest located 40 kilometers north of Grand Rapids in Balsam Township, Itasca County, Minnesota, USA. Work was completed in the outlet stream at the base of each watershed as follows (in decimal degrees) as well as within the lagg:
S2 = -93.47215 W, 47.51396 N
S3 = -93.46252 W, 47.52324 N
S6 = -93.46956 W, 47.51962 N

The bounding coordinates provide are the maximum extents of the eastern, western, northern, and southern corners of the North and South Units of the Marcell Experimental Forest.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Coordinates of three sampling site locations were recorded using a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx unit. Accuracy of the location coordinates are within 5 meters.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Invertebrate taxa identifications were compared amongst multiple taxonomic references and against other archived reference specimens stored in the Grand Rapids Aquatics Laboratory. Individuals of the genera Cyphon and Fossaria were keyed out as such using multiple taxonomic references but are not accepted names according to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (https://www.itis.gov). Cyphon and Fossaria genera names were replaced with Elodes and Galba genus names, respectively.
Completeness_Report:
Some organisms were not identifiable below to lower taxonomic levels due to their small size, physical condition of the collected organism, and/or difficulties with identification using available microscopy. In some cases, the word "multiple" was used when there were multiple families and or genera applicable for the aquatic invertebrate sample.

Methodology_Description:
Aquatic invertebrates were randomly collected in outlet streams and lagg portions of catchments S2, S3, and S6 at Marcell Experimental Forest, MN during April 2009. The exact locations of invertebrates within the outlet streams and laggs were not recorded as that was not an objective of this qualitative survey. The survey was conducted in acidic bogs (S2 and S6) and an alkaline fen (S3) to determine differences and similarities of invertebrate diversity among peatland types. The S2 catchment contains a 3.2-hectare (ha) black spruce bog and a 6.5-ha aspen and birch upland (Sebestyen et al. 2011). The S2 watershed has been used as a reference for experiments conducted on the S1, S3, and S6 watersheds. The S6 catchment contains a 2.0-ha black spruce bog as well as a 6.9-ha upland of white spruce and red pine. S6 was also the site of an aspen upland clearcut and conversion to conifer upland study and a sulfate addition study (Sebestyen et al. 2011). The S3 catchment contains a 18.6-ha alkaline fen and a 53.4-ha tamarack and paper birch upland (Sebestyen et al. 2011). Bogs at MEF are perched above the aquifer and are fed by precipitation (Verry et al. 2011). The centers of most bogs are raised slightly and are surrounded by wet lagg zones (Sebestyen et al. 2011). Water from the uplands and bog centers flow into the lagg zones which drain from the bog through short (30-200 meters [m]) outlet streams (Verry et al. 2011). Most outlet streams draining the bogs are intermittent, flowing only for a few months after snowmelt or during high precipitation periods. In the S3 fen, the outlet streams are perennial, a result of precipitation inputs and groundwater inputs from the aquifer. Flows from the S3 fen are less variable than those from the S2 and S6 bogs (Verry et al. 2011). All of the outlet streams are low gradient (<0.5%), shallow, shaded, and with peat and silt substrate on the stream bottom.

Aquatic invertebrates were collected from each catchment using D-frame and hand nets (250 micrometer [um] mesh), placed in plastic pollination bags, and transported to the Grand Rapids Aquatics laboratory on ice. Invertebrate samples were stored in a laboratory refrigerator until sorted. Invertebrates were sorted from organic matter by hand using a Meiji EMZ-5 dissecting stereoscope (magnification = 70x-450x) in the laboratory and stored in vials containing 7% formalin solution. Invertebrates were identified to order, family, and genus taxonomic levels using multiple taxonomic keys to the freshwater invertebrates of the United States (Merritt et al. 2008; Eddy and Hodson 1982, Thorp and Covich 1991, Smith 2001, Wiggins 1996). Roundworms were not identified below the phylum taxonomic level due to their small size and difficulties of identification to lower taxonomic levels using available microscopy. Functional Feeding Groups (FFG) were assigned to each identified organism.

The combination of the taxonomic data and FFG assignments were combined into a single file. Additional aquatic invertebrate taxa will be identified and added to this MEF invertebrate database as time and technical assistance availability permits.
