Description:
Abstract:
Watershed disturbances following wildfire can have broad, long lasting, and variable influence on downstream hydrogeomorphic processes causing increased flood risk and sedimentation. With a changing climate, these post-fire downstream impacts may be enhanced by increasing wildfire frequency and severity compounded by increasing intensity of extreme precipitation. Anticipating and preparing for post-fire downstream infrastructure impacts has proved challenging for natural resource and infrastructure managers across the western United State. This has necessitated the development and evaluation of hydrology informed post-fire risk management decision criteria. Within this work, to improve understanding of long-term hydrogeomorphic watershed recovery, we continued to monitor streamflow and precipitation at an existing hydrologic monitoring network at the Grizzly Creek Fire, Colorado (2020). This data package includes our collected 2023 post-fire hydrologic streamflow and precipitation data.
Purpose:
This streamflow and precipitation data were collected to study the hydrogeomorphic response and risks following the Grizzly Creek Fire, CO as part of Joint Fire Science Project (JFSP) ID: 22-1-01-31.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Precipitation values are determined to be "true". Quality assurance/quality control checks were completed using time series analysis and visual inspection. Values that were determined to be inaccurate due to potential for precipitation other than rain to have been measured (snow) in the winter months (October - May) and damage to the instrument in September 2023 were removed from the dataset.

Streamflow values are determined to be "true". Quality assurance/quality control checks were completed using time series analysis and visual inspection. Instrument was regularly maintained via cleaning of biofilms and sedimentation and regularly field surveyed allowing for measurement correction.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Precipitation and streamflow time series plots were visually inspected for consistency throughout the record and compared with other nearby collected data (including precipitation and streamflow from the U.S. Geological Survey) for rainfall and flow event occurrence consistency.
Completeness_Report:
All precipitation and streamflow data collected as part of the JFSP Project Id: 22-1-01-31 are complete and included in this package. Additional collection notes and data use documentation is included within the Grant Final Report (Land and Canham 2024).

Methodology_Description:
The Grizzly Creek Fire ignited on August 10, 2020 near Glenwood Springs, Colorado, USA and burned at total of 132 square kilometers along a 19 kilometer stretch of the Colorado River within Glenwood Canyon. Hydrologic data including precipitation and streamflow were collected by the authors (Utah State University [USU]) from 2020 through 2023, where data collected in 2020 through 2022, were completed as part of prior work and data collected in 2023 were supported by this JFSP GRIN award using the existing hydrologic monitoring network. 2023 data are included within this data package.

PRECIPITATION

We installed one tipping-bucket rain gage (Onset, Bourne, MA) on Spruce Ridge to the southeast of the Grizzly Creek Fire (39.5769, -107.0994). Spruce rain gage was not equipped with telemetry so we downloaded the data during site visits. The precipitation data for each rain gage were processed to identify individual precipitation events.

STREAMFLOW

After the fire in September 2020, we installed a streamflow gage in the Colorado River below Grizzly Creek using a Level TROLL 400 pressure transducer (In-situ, Fort Collins, CO). We collected streamflow data through October 2023 at the Colorado River below Grizzly Creek. The streamflow gages were not equipped with telemetry so data were downloaded manually during site visits. Discharge was calculated from measured pressure using a post-fire survey developed stage-discharge rating curve.
