Abstract:
Fire scar histories are a critical fire data source because they form a foundation for defining fire regimes. This data package contains crossdated tree-ring measurements used to date fire scars for Burnt Mountain within the Huron Mountain Club in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from 1535 to 1900. These data are part of a larger project to archive fire history data in the southern and eastern United States.
Purpose:
Fire regime descriptions are used to inform land-management objectives, calibrate fire models, and address long-term land-use and climate-change effects. Multi-century and high quality fire scar datasets are unique datasets and are particularly uncommon in the eastern United States (US). These data, along with previously collected data were used to parametrize and calibrate a continental fire frequency model based on climate. The most important contribution of this model was towards understanding climate forcing of fire regimes across the continental US.

Fire scar history studies were completed for a total of twelve sites. This data package represents data from just one of those sites.

Ring-width series from each sample were plotted and these graphs used for visual crossdating (Stokes and Smiley 1968). These plots helped aid in identifying errors in measurement and missing or false rings. COFECHA software (Holmes 1983) was used to aid in absolute tree-ring dating and measurement quality control. Methodology_Description:
Contacted eastern region fire and forest managers and scientists to attempt to location potential fire history sites with few or no existing fire history studies. Based on the resulting information many sites were located and surveyed for fire scarred trees and stump remnants that had potential for fire history data prior to the EuroAmerican settlement. Sites were chosen to fill geographic and ecological voids in the knowledge of historic fire regimes of eastern deciduous and subtropical forests. Sites were ultimately chosen based on availability and quality of fire history material.

For Burnt Mountain thirty three trees were sampled, yielding 44 fire scars and 26 six fire intervals (27 fire years).

Cross sections of trees were collected from natural remnant and live trees using a chainsaw or crosscut saw. Locations of samples were recorded using a GPS unit and notes made about sample orientation with respect to cardinal direction, aspect, and slope.

Tree cross sections were surfaced with an electric hand planer and then sanded with progressively finer sandpaper (80 to 1200 grit) until the cellular detail of annual rings and fire scar injuries were revealed. A radius with the least amount of ring-width variability was chosen for measuring the tree ring width. Samples were crossdated with master dating chronologies.

After cross sections were dated, we were able to assign calendar years, and sometimes seasonality to fire scar injuries.

This data package has 2 data files, both of which are ASCII text files.

DATAFILE: mi019.txt
This ASCII .txt file contains fire scar measurement and tree ring measurements from pine trees at Burnt Mountain, Michigan. This data file has three sections.

Section 1:
The first section contains general information, regarding authors, location, and reference materials.

Section 2:
The second section contains data regarding correlation of series by segments. The correlations are 50 year dated segments, lagged 25 years. They contain a sequence number which numbers each sample. It also has a series number which is a six digit phrase of numbers and letters signifying the sampling station and a time span between the years which the samples are dated. The standard format is:
Columns 1-4 = sequence number.
Columns 5-13 = the series number of the tree, BRT signifies the tree is from Burnt Mountain and the numbers and letters further denote a specific sample.
Columns 14-23 = the time spans of the measurements, containing a starting year and an ending year.
Columns 24-29 = the measurements for the years 1525-1574.
Columns 29-34 = the measurements for the years 1550-1599.
Columns 34-39 = the measurements for the years 1575-1624.
Columns 39-44 = the measurements for the years 1600-1649.
Columns 44-49 = the measurements for the years 1625-1674.
Columns 49-54 = the measurements for the years 1650-1699.
Columns 54-59 = the measurements for the years 1675-1724.

This ASCII .txt file contains the measurements in units of .01 millimeters (mm) of the thickness of tree ring width for each year. Each file consists of all the measurements for a given site. There are 2 sections to this data file.

Section 1:
The first section consists of 3 rows that contain basic information about the data file.
Row 1 =
Column 1-6 = Site ID.
Column 10-61 = Site name.
Column 62-65 = Species code and optional ID numbers.

Row 2 =
Column 1-6 = Site ID.
Column 10-22 = State or Country.
Column 23-30 = Species.
Column 41-45 = Elevation (m=meters).
Column 48-57 = The latitude and longitude of the site.
Column 68-76 = 1st and last year measured.

Row 3 =
Column 1-6 = Site ID.
Column 10-72 = Name of lead investigator.


Section 2:
The section contains measurements in units of .01 mm of the thickness of tree ring width for each year. Each file consists of all the measurements for a given site. As many as 50 Core ID numbers and 50 data series may comprise one (site) file. Missing value code is 999 or blanks. The 10 values following the decade are the 10 annual measurements for the 10 years of that decade. The format is:
Columns 1-6 = Core ID number.
Columns 9-12 = Decade.
Columns 13-72 = Annual tree ring widths (0.01 mm) for the 10 years of the specified decade.
