Buchanan Pass Trail # 910

The trail passes through thick patches of blueberries and huckleberries high above the rushing Buchanan Creek. After about .75 miles, the path becomes level with the creek. The next mile to the Gourd Lake Trail turnoff (2.3 miles from the trailhead) is a gradual climb paralleling the creek and Thunderbolt Peak to the right. After another mile, the trail crosses a single log footbridge over a stream that flows from Island Lake. The trail crosses a second stream that originates at Gourd Lake. Pass the Gourd Lake Trail turnoff and you approach the forthcoming Fox Park. Buchanan Pass rises 1,400 feet above Fox Park. The trail climbs the remaining two miles emerging onto alpine tundra, from here the trail steepens as several switchbacks lead up the last rocky slope of the pass.
