Mountain View Campground

Area Status: Open

Mountain View Campground is located just east of Lowman, Idaho, along Highway 21 at an elevation of 3,900 feet.

Visitors enjoy rafting, kayaking and fishing on the South Fork Payette River, and soaking in the area's many hot springs pools. 

Natural Features:

Towering Ponderosa pines cover the campground, offering partial shade in most sites. Summer wildflowers dot the landscape. Deer and elk may be seen wandering through the area on occasion.

Recreation:

The South Fork Payette River offers whitewater rafting, kayaking and trout fishing. The Deadwood and Danskin River Access areas are nearby.

Popular Kirkham Hot Springs is less than 3 miles from the campground, with several soaking pools on the river's edge.

Nearby Attractions:

Numerous natural hot springs pools can be found along Highway 21, the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway and the Banks-Lowman Highway, also known as the Wildlife Canyon Scenic Byway. Both byways offer scenic views, wildlife watching, historical information kiosks and several trail opportunities.

Whitewater rafting and kayaking are popular activities on the South Fork and Main Payette Rivers. Several companies in the area offer guided half and full-day trips.

Reservations: This is a fee campground with 14 sites. Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Some sites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fee envelopes and a collection box are provided near the entrance. Please bring cash or a check.  Extra vehicle fees will be collected at the campground. Day use parking is $5.00. Please contact the Lowman Ranger District at 208-259-3361 for off-season camping information.

General Information

Directions:
  • From Boise, Idaho, travel north along State Highway 55 to Banks, Idaho approximately 38 miles.

  • At Banks, turn right (east) onto State Highway 17 (Banks/Lowman Road) and travel 31 miles to Lowman, Idaho.

  • At Lowman, turn left at the intersection of State Highway 17 and State Highway 21.  Proceed east towards Stanley, Idaho along State Highway 21

  • Mountain View Campground is on the right about a mile further at milepost 73.2 on State Highway 21.

Facilities:

The campground contains several single-family sites, all of which are accessible, each with a picnic table, campfire ring and grill. Vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided. A campground host is on-site. Roads and parking spurs are paved.

River and Stream Fishing

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game manages the South Fork of the Payette River as wild fishery. No stocking occurs along the river. However, fishing is a popular activity with rainbow trout and whitefish being the predominant species.
