Gunsight Pass Trail
Difficulty: Moderate Trail Use: Light (except during hunting season)
Length: 3 miles from Trailhead to jct with Sohare Cr Trail #4102
Elevation: 9490 ft at Trailhead, 8820 ft at jct with Sohare Cr
Open to: Hikers, Equestrian, Mountain Bikes
Trail Highlights:
- The trail begins by dropping down from the parking lot and crossing through a large open meadow. The trail continues through the meadow, becoming faint in several areas. Keep following the general path and you will reach a small saddle with a sign on a tree that says “crosscut”.
- The trail in the saddle actually climbs the hill directly in front of you and continues on, but is not a system trail. The Gunsight Pass Trail takes off in the drainage down below the sign to the right. Drop down to the small creek and you will see the trail starting to descend.
- The trail drops steeply down and is fairly rough and washed out. It was cleared in the summer of 2012 and you will notice chainsaw cuts. The trail continues to descend through several open meadows, winding in and out of the forest. You will cross several small creeks, rolling up and down through large meadows until eventually reaching the Sohare Creek drainage where you will reach a trail junction in the meadow by the creek.
Options:
- There are no loop options from this trail on system trails. You can follow Sohare Cr Trail down to the Cottonwood Cr Trail and follow it out to the trailhead, but it will require a shuttle. The Kettle Cr Trail also takes off from the Sohare junction and you could potentially follow it up and back around to Gunsight Pass, but there are no system trails connecting the two.
