The Lunch Counter/Kahuna overlook area provides parking for those who wish to watch and photograph river floaters going through the famous Lunch Counter and Big Kahuna rapids.
Parking is very limited and is restricted to vehicles without trailers only, as a vehicle and trailer combination cannot turn around once in the parking area, blocking other visitors from using the area. This rule is strictly enforced so please plan accordingly.
This area has two different observation areas which each have their own trail. The first and upper observation area's trail begins near the outhouse and leads to an overlook of Big Kahuna Rapid, which is larger during the later part of the summer once high water levels receed. The second trail begins at the south end of the parking area and leads visitors to the rocky ledges on river right. This area provides a close-up view of river floaters being tossed through Lunch Counter rapid, which is larger during the beginning of the season. This second observation area can be slippery and is very close to the water. It is recommended that visitors proceed very carefully and do not get into the river while at this observation area as river currents are incredibly strong even in the areas that look calm, and boat traffic is high.
Whitewater kayakers and experienced paddleboarders often use this area to surf and play in the waves of this stretch, providing excellent entertainment to those observing.
